GOOD drip is hard to beat. I drink drip, daily. But my drip is prepared CORRECTLY (click here for a hi-res pic which shows my drip cone filter holder on my Nissan Stainless bottle) using reverse osmosis purified water, manual heating (just a few seconds prior to boil) and freshly roasted estate coffee blends roasted myself that same week. And I'll tell you - nobody makes coffee as good as mine. Nobody.

Email me your snailer. BTW, here's a pic of the coffee roaster I use. But you can roast coffee without a roaster, just to see if you like it. It's really simple. Here's a link to learn the basics and options available if you're interested in exploring the wonderful world of home coffee roasting!

http://www.sweetmarias.com is a great place to start off. Once you get the hang of roasting your own and have an idea of the bean varieties you prefer, then you're ready to start seeking out better values and buying in bulk. For example, the 100 lb. bag of Greenwell Farms #1 (16-17 screen) Kona I did a group buy on was simply sublime - and about HALF the price of buying it a pound or five at a time. The 20 lbs. of Guatamalan Huehuetenango from Finca Injerto (2004 crop) was a steal at something like $3.50/lb. compared with the $5+/lb Sweet Marias wants.

I *AM* a coffee snob as you can tell. I have a passion for strong cigars, strong coffee and zippy cars. What else can I say!

Coffee's like beer in one respect... Good coffee is better than bad coffee, but bad coffee's better than no coffee!

Since, for me, beer is nectar of the gods, I appreciate your analogy CottyGee

Thumbs down No offense but, I hate Starbuck's and I don't even drink coffee!

The thing I hate about Starbuck's is that 50% of the people that drink it are the type of people I hate to be around. They kind of all have the same mentality on life. Not saying that the guys in this forum are that way, it’s just the whole "I'm a (you know what) if I don't get my Starbucks in the morning!" mentality really gets me ticked. The people with that mentality are the same people that cut you off on the road drinking their Starbucks coffee in their Toyota Camry's. At last I must say I feel real sorry for the people that work there. Just imagine dealing with those type of people that act like they are better then everyone else and think that where and what they have to do that day is more important than what you have to do, must be hell. I mean, you have to serve coffee to those people, and some of the reasons that make them that way is the coffee they drink, its like cigarettes to them, if they don't get it their total @$$ holes.

Long story short imagine having to ask those type of people "And how do you spell you’re name so I can write it on you’re cup for you, and then lick the crap off you’re shoes." What happened to the old drink some to find out if it’s yours, and if you can't figure out which one is yours then maybe you shouldn't be so worried about drinking coffee so much.

People in the northeast know that the best coffee is Tim Hortons... a "Tim" for short. Never ridiculously strong and corrosive like omnipresent SB. Just a mild relaxing cup of satisfying country-style brew that makes you smile all day.

Hey Dragon, what do you mean northeast, read my post on Tim's and I'm in the west. Coffee is cheaper and better than SB. I don't fit in with the SB crowd!!!!!!

CottyGee, I completely agree - roasting your own is the only way to go. My wife and I figured how much we were paying yearly for 2 lattes a day, and instead bought our own espresso machine. I buy green beans off the Internet and roast them in my back yard grill each weekend. About half an hour, including cleanup, and the coffee is so much better than anything you can buy it's unreal. I'm drinking my morning latte now. Damn, is it GOOD!

SB succeeds because the competition is often so lame. It isn't totally simple to make a good espresso - it takes training and dedication, and most "baristas" don't really give a hoot. They're working at a coffee house because it's a cool job. Find a dedicated barista, and the espresso can be orders of magnitude better.

Starbucks coffee

I agree Mikeyjohn Starbucks is way too expensive and way too strong. Yes Tim Hortons has moved west and has a very loyal following. Ever notice how in the line-ups that people quietly let the guy who has been waiting in the slow line go to the next free cashier instead of insisting on being served themselves first. A "Tim" does that to people. It gives you that warm feeling that Coke portrayed in its advertising years ago--"I'd like to buy the world a Coke ..."
