Anyone make it to the Indy F1 race this year? I know we had a few members like II Kings at last year's F1asco. Weren't they going to get free tx for this year? Looked like a pretty decent race from what I saw on SPEED, course I'm partial to Michael and the red team anyway. Crowds looked pretty good from what I could see, but I notice a lot of empty spaces. Bernie professed he wanted to come back to Indy next year, we'll see.
If you've never been to an F1 race, it's quite the experience. When I think about it, the sounds of racing have always been a big attraction. Whether it's the rumpa, rumpa, rumpa of an old school hemi, the afterburner kicking in on a jet dragster or the scream of an F1 car, it's all music to my ears. Listen to the sounds of an F1 car down the straight at Indy here:
http://www.usgpindy.com/news/story.php?story_id=5746. In person, it is unbelievable. Some of these cars are turning 18,000 - 19,000 rpm.
I'm been an F1 fan since high school, when they didn't even have advertising on the cars. I attended a number of races at Watkins Glen and I can still hear the sounds of the Matra 16 cyl. motor in my head. (Because of too much rock music, loud motors and firearms as a youth, it's about all I can still hear)
F1 back then was a lot more casual. Technology and aerodynamics hadn't totally taken over and there was a lot more passing going on during the races. Now position seems to be decided by pit strategy more than anything.
You could even talk to the mechanics and see the cars up close back in the old Kendall Center at the end of the day, a far cry from today's mob scene at the Pit Walk.
And then, there was always "The Bog"
