Angry Hard Drive went in new desktop after 8 months

Hello Gang,

I'm on my laptop for the next few days...On Friday, the hard drive in my new desktop system went after 8 months. I called Gateway tech support and they walked me through all the troubleshooting that they could think of, and came to the conclusion that the hard drive failed on me.

Here's the story, Late last week, the computer started acting up and sending me error messages upon startup and I would go to repair the problem and the problem would keep cropping back up. I went to start the computer up on Friday and the computer just looped between the XP startup screen and the Gateway splash screen. I contacted Gateway again this afternoon, and they are sending me new hard drives. (The system has 2 hard drives inside in a RAID configuration) I should have the replacement drives in a few days...I'll keep everyone posted.

Have you tried running chkdsk -r on it? Might have some bad sectors on the drive. If you had data you need on it there are lots of programs and companies that will help you get that data. Times like these that remind us to backup often.

Also check your motherboard. Look at the capacitors around the processor... are any of them bulging or have what looks like a dried booger on them? Then you have some leaky caps and it's actually not the hard drives but the mobo that needs to be swapped.

Sorry to read of this tragedy. Yes, I’m afraid we’re all guilty of not properly backing stuff up. So with that reminder I did just that. I would hate to lose my HD. Hope you’re able to get it fixed up quickly. Good luck!

Arrow Hard Disk update--Back up and running....

Hello Gang,

I'm back up and running now. I had to replace both drives due to failure. I'm in the process of reinstalling software and updates to drivers, etc. It wasn't that hard to get in there and pull the drives out..The drives are in a 'cage' inside the case that has 2 sliding switches that hold the drive mechanism in the bay.

I am now in the process of tweaking and updating the system to the way that I like to use the system. Tonight I started also loading my music CD's back in and updating the audio and video drivers and adjusting sounds and video.

The drives came preloaded with all the original software that shipped with the system when I took it out of the box for the first time, which made part of the setup easier to deal with.

Did you run raid 0 or 1?
If you had raid1 you should have a complete working mirrored hd. left
All you have to do is run a new raid volume on you new drive.
If raid 0 I guess you are SOL.
Good luck
Gary
