How to speak Australian

Seems a lot of you yanks have had little exposure to Australian slang known as the "Strine" (pronounced "str-eye-n") so here's a few choice car related phrases to get you through your next cultural exchange (although with less than 20% of you owning passports it's doubtful you'll need it!)

the boot = what you blokes call a trunk
sink the boot into it = accelerate hard as in "sink the boot into it we need to get there quick"
anchors = the brakes, as in "hit the anchors before we hit that tree!"
wallopers = cops
bonnet = the hood
manual = stick shift
petrol = gas
ricer = any Asian car
Hiroshima screamer = any performance Asian car
bogan/bevan/westie = a person of lower socio-economic status, usually found in the car park of MickeyD's on a Saturday night talking about cars
MickeyD's = McDonalds
pigs in space = Police Helicopter
speed camera = a camera attached to a radar device that photographs your number plate if you're speeding and sends you a fine in the mail
servo = short for service station, a place to buy suspect sushi, ciggies, condoms and sometimes petrol
tyres = tires

Of a more general nature you'll also hear:

galah = a joker
drongo = person of low intellect
mate = anyone whose name you don't know
bag of fruit = a gentlemen's suit
bloke = any male
a full/half mongrel = a hard on
Hungry Jacks = Burger King (don't ask me it's just what it's called, okay!)
wanker = someone who is full of themself, literally a masturbater
good sort = an attractive female
top sort = a very attractive female
a good sort and a top sport = any female who will sleep with you
front wheeler = a sheila
sheila = a female
front wheel skid = a Yid or Jew
Abo = aboriginal (not politically correct/PC)
Murri = aboriginal (politically correct)
septic = shorthand for "septic tank" or "yank": an American
kiwi = someone from New Zealand (PC)
coconut = a Pacific Islander (borderline PC - depends how big the coconut is!)
dropkick = shorthand for "dropkick punt" which is rhyming slang for c-you-nt (sorry!) but these days is in common use as a substitute for drongo (see above) so totally PC
ciggies = cigarettes, you guys call it "having a f@g"
f@g = a homosexual
poofter/poof = homosexual
Willy Woofter = poofter
a bloke = any male
a pot/schooner/midi/glass/handle/pony = all terms for a serve of beer depending on which state you are in. Aussies can quickly tell which state you grew up in by how you order a beer
pig's ear = a beer
the pub = short for "public house" or bar

There's thousands more and if anyone is interested I'll post more but that's a start anyway!

lol... Sweet...

I or one of my brethren needs to post a Ebonics thread. Since a lot of people are embracing the Hip-Hop Culture (their inner black man).

Some mild input to that, specifically related to 'ricers'. Generally this is the typical hardcore with an import with subwoofers, chrome rims & bodykit, a huge spoiler and a million aftermarket sponsorship stickers (they give you the stickers with the aftermarket part, and most of them are pretty respectable. What it doesn't tell you is the 'ricer' bough the cheap-arse lowest model of that company's part).
Generally I give credit where credit is due, and import racers that actually have decent modifications done are considered 'cars'.

Some other terms:
"Phat Cannons"/Coffee tin: the rediculously large (>6" diameter) mufflers 'ricers' put on their cars. Usually produce an incredibly loud, incredibly annoying drone when idling.
Bumblebee in a Beer Can: Slang for a car with a Rotary (Wankel) engine.
Pommie: British/English person. Often hurled about during the Ashes cricket games, almost always preceeded by a profanity. The 'poms' retort by calling Aussies 'The/Filthy Convicts'.
Prang: Slang for a car accident, usually referring to minor impacts.
Cat Pi$$: American Beer
Bull$hit: A profane term for lying, i.e. Bull$hitting, "That's bull$hit!". Used far and away more often than in other countries.
Bloody: A profanity used similar to 'f***ing'. For example, "Bloody Poms!"
Pub: Bar/Truck Stop

Yes, we seem like a very foul-mouthed lot, but 80% of the time we're a relatively civil lot. Walk into any pub, however, and prepare to have your ears assaulted.

Well done NVS & Gunslinger, bonzer mates.

You missed "Root", or it's derivatives. Danno knows all about rooting (well the Aussie use of the word at least).

Root: (pr. roo-t)
1. The base structure of any vegetation, specifically for the storage of nutrients and absorbtion of aquifers.
2. Australian slang for Sexual Intercourse, used in phrases such as "She and I are definately rooting tonight", "I just got a root", "My bl**dy dog is rooting that pig!". Can also be used in a profane manner, such as "You're rooted mate!". Similar to the word 'F&*$', although sexual emphasis is almost inverse; with great emphasis on sexual innuendo, whereas f&*$ is more oriented towards profanity.

See also: Sex, Shagging, Horizontal Line Dancing, Getting On The Good Foot and Doing The Bad Thing, The Monkey Dance of Love, and Rubbing Pink Bits.

Sorry to get off topic but, speaking of ricers...Have you guys ever checked this website out? Ricecop! It's pretty hilarious to look at the ridiculous things some of these guys do to their cars.

Such as this abortion of a car.

manual = stick shift That one started here in the US.

ricer = any Asian car We've been using that term for years here.

MickeyD's = McDonalds Again, the term started in the US

speed camera = a camera attached to a radar device that photographs your number plate if you're speeding and sends you a fine in the mail We use this one too, although it's also known here as photo radar.

septic = shorthand for "septic tank" or "yank": an American Now that is just plain rude. If we threatened to stop exporting 300's to you guys or stop importing Molinaros and Foster's Lager, do you think you guys might change your attitudes? You don't see us calling you guys "prisoner spawn".

ciggies = cigarettes, you guys call it "having a f@g" We don't call it that here. I think you're confusing us with the Brits.

f@g = a homosexual We call them that too.

the pub = short for "public house" or bar We use that term too, but usually in the Irish owned or themed establishments.

There's thousands more and if anyone is interested I'll post more but that's a start anyway!

Unfortunately, that car is not a ricer. It is a Chevy Cavalier.
