anyone tinted your house?

Just curious? anyone tinted their house windows? It gets pretty hot here, right now it's around 99-101 but when it peaks it's around 125. and being that the sun is just beating down on the side and back of the house , it gets hot in the room. well tinted the whole house except the front last month and it's not that dark tint, lightly tinted but not too light, hard to explain. man what a difference, it feels sooo much better, not as HOT as before. Downside, it tends to leave the room bit light dark, I like BRIGHT room but It's a great trade off.

The back of my house faces west (in south Florida) with sliding glass doors all the way across, I had them "tinted" with just a very slight tint (I did not go darker so that I can still see into the pool yard at night), this blocks just about all of the UV rays which saves the carpet & furniture from fading & helps with the amount of heat that comes through (not all tint blocks UV rays, some are just tint, check with your installer), plus if the sliding glass door ever did break the tint helps hold most of the glass together. When this was done I also had a full length front window done in completely clear along with a glass coffee table & glass wall unit for safety as I had an infant daughter at the time.

To me it was money well spent for the UV protection, heat issue & safety.

3M window film front and back, my house faces West. 99% UV protection to save the furniture and heat rejection helps keep things cool in the summer. That's in addition to low E coating on the windows and argon gas in between the panes - some kind of high tech windows.

I always figured it was worth the investment, it saved a lot of furniture. If you pay for 3M, just make sure the installer pulls it out of a 3M box. I was scammmed once in Northern Va.

I haven't done my house, as it is a 1906 Craftsman with 247,000 little panes to cover individually, but I did do some of the office windows.
This is simple to do, but somehow the three people who were trying to do it at the office were making a total mess. I have also done a few cars, so I knew the main tricks.
1- Make sure the window is CLEAN. That means scraping the entire surface with a NEW razor blade before you do a final clean.
2-Cut the film oversize for the window. You can trim it exact later.
3- Use a spray bottle to wet the whole window and the film as you are applying the film.
4-Get two people (three if available). Spray the bottom and apply the lower section to the window and use a good squeege to work the water and air bubbles out. Work from the center out with the squeege, with the other person(s) holding the unapplied film away from the glass.
5- Make sure you work ALL the water and bubbles out as you apply the film. Work slowly and use the squeege to lay the film onto the glass (don't lay the film onto the entire window by hand).
6- KEEP SPRAYING THE WATER, between the glass and film, and ontop of the film to make the sqeege slide easier. If you go up and see bubbles of air OR WATER left behind, peel it back, spray, and work it back down with the squeege.
Keep working with the squeege from the center out until you have layed down all the film onto the glass.
After all is applied, you can go around the edges with a razor to trim exact.

There are probably better instructions that come with the kit. I did this about 8-years ago and my notes are from memory.

Hope this helps!

edit: Man, I am some kind of moron... I need to read these posts before replying. I now see that you have ALREADY tinted your windows. Well, maybe someone else will benefit, if only by laughing!

I had my whole house tinted and it certainly didn’t make it cave like. I have sky lights that were tinted also. The Florida sunshine gets too brutal and will fade my furniture. Now if you want dark caves try putting up non-transparent hurricane shutters.
