Well, I did a search for best guitarists and came up with this list - The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time : Rolling Stone.

Dead ones: Roy Buchanan (allegedly committed suicide in a Fairfax, VA jail) & Danny Gatton (committed suicide in MD)

I have to awaken this thread from the dead just for one guy

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta!

This guy is crazy good.. possibly the best guitar of this time (should at least make it on the top 50 of all time).. he's also a great bassist!
