EDMONTON (CBC) - A 12-year-old boy was arrested for leading Alberta RCMP on a highway chase at speeds reaching 170 km/h early Monday morning.

RCMP in Ponoka, about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton, responded to a call of a possible impaired driver on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway at 1 a.m.

When they located the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and led police on a 40-kilometre pursuit north on the highway. The car reached 170 km/h and swerved in and out of its lane at times, police said.

Officers deployed two spike belts and stopped the car north of Highway 13.

The 12-year-old driver was arrested and charged with several offences, including dangerous driving and taking a motor vehicle without consent.

RCMP said there will be a bail hearing to determine if the boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will be released or held in custody until his first court appearance.

Every time I read stories like this I get really P.O. at police officers. Gee.. I wonder WHY the 12 year old reached speeds of 170 km/h? Hmm.... could it be because the POLICE were chasing him? How stupid. In Victoria, B.C. - where I live - police are no longer allowed to 'give chase'. And rightfully so. If someone stole MY CAR I would NOT be happy if the thief killed someone because he was being chased by the police. It is - after all - JUST A CAR. If the speeds are reasonable - sure - stay behind the guy. But let him go if he's speeding like a maniac and putting EVERYONE'S life a risk.

Craig!!
Any relatively young police officer who denies wanting an opportunity to get in a car chase or shoot his gun is a liar. Once they've been shot at and involved in a car accident they wise up a bit, but until that it's charge in with c*ck in hand. Having said that though, standard procedure is to 'back off' if a suspect drives dangerously, but if they don't show any signs of slowing down or driving any less recklessly after the police have backed off for a period of time, they 'give chase' and attempt to shut the car down before the driver kills someone. The 40km distance and use of spike strips leads me to believe they simply followed procedure, and considering it's a kid behind the wheel, he has no motive to slow down.

Craig!!

The problem with this idea is it tells a criminal all they have to do to avoid arrest is to hit 160km/h or whatever the decided maximun safe speed is. If we are talking about someone in a stolen car the police can't just look up the licence plate number and rock up at their house! If the person is running then there must be a reason and that may be as simple as they stole the car or it may be that they have a warrant out for them for murder.

That kid is insane! I'm 16 and would never run from the cops.

You know whats weird though? I was just watching the news a few minutes ago and there was a story about a 12 year old who got a DUI. Apparently he raided the liquor cabinet before stealing his uncles car and driving off.

Yeah and we are sharing the roads with them.

Brendan, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. Take the time to build your experience in driving and look forward to driving faster cars.

Thanks Hemi, that means a lot too me.

I joined these forums as a sort of, inspiration. To set a goal for myself. I want to learn more about cars, get a steady job, and save up to by myself the car I want.

I know a little about cars, but I would love to learn more. One of my career choices would be to be a mechanic, because thats one job that will be around for a while. My other choice is something in computers, but it seems most jobs of that aspect are moving overseas due to outsourcing.

I am driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe right now. It's a nice car, but it's definitely not my choice, or my style. I'm too young to care about the style of car I drive, so I don't complain, I'll take what I can get. When I am a senior in high school, my dad and I are going to purchase a classic car for us me restore. I'm looking to maybe get myself a Buick Grand National.

My family has a handful of nice cars that I get to drive the often, so I know what I am looking for in a car. My mom drives a 2007 Cadillac SRX, my brother drives a 1972 Buick Skylark, my dad drives a 1967 Chevrolet Impala, and we also have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring XLI.

I absolutly love my our SRX. It's the fastest car I have ever driven and it's extremely smooth on the road.

I'm really into luxury, classy looking cars such as the 300 or the SRX. The 300 is a car I feel would be a great choice for a first new car when I move away and have my own residence.

Sorry for rambling, I just felt like this was a good time to introduce myself.
