You can put the batteries in parallel too. When you do that the voltage stays the same but you increase your amp-hours. It is possible to make the 6V battery this way but I knew the video was bogus when all the batteries just fell out individually instead of in small packs. Now if you could put 4 batteries in series and then 8 of those packs in parallel (4S8P) you'd have a nice 6V battery with 8 times the run time over a single 4-cell AA battery pack.

All the military batteries now are like Cueball said. They are either primary (one time use) lithium batteries or secondary (rechargeable) lithium batteries. The biggest reason is size and weight. The lithium batteries have a higher specific energy (Wh/kg) over other common battery technologies. For the dismounted soldier, the less the batteries weighs the more ammo, food, water they can carry.
