A full dime at 50yd would be about 1.4MOA at 100yds. You got to remember, a 30-06 is a hunting round though, not a target round so of course a .223 has an unfair advantage at 100yds.

The target is a nice'un

That is a smooth looking rifle. I'd be interested in knowing how it feels and shoots if you get it. I have no experience with this level of shooting but anytime you can get to the range is a good time.

I think a 1.4 MOA with my 30-06 is about as good as i can expect. That bullet has a 4" drop at 200 yds when sighted in at 100 yds. Any further than that you start lobbing the bullet at the target.

From the 30-06s I've seen people shoot and the magazine reviews I've seen (to be a member of the gun club here - only good range in the area - you have to join the NRA, so I get American Riflemen, and then the place where I buy ammo from signs you up for Guns & Ammo each year you shop with them...I wouldn't buy it otherwise), 1.4MOA for a 30-06 is pretty darn amazing. Nothing after .308 seems to be good for target.

It looks like because of the mini-14 hand guard, a 50mm objective won't fit with the supplied rings, and I'm worried that by going to a higher ring I won't be able to use the cheek piece. Do you think 4.5-14x40 would be too dim?

all my scopes are 40mm and they work fine for me. Never used a 50mm. Best thing to do is bring the gun in and ask to try out different scopes.

Nice well stocked gun stores are hard to come by. The place I'm buying this rifle from says three things on its roof: the name in the center, Cigarettes on the left, and Firearms on the right...gun has to be ordered from the distributor (nobody around here stocks decent guns), so whatever scope I get will have to be from a online store with a good return policy.

Well it sounds like you might want to try and get on a mini-14 forum site and ask around there. It would be a shame to order your gun and scope only to find they don't match up the way you want. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Yeah, I checked in on one and someone took a photo. Bigger than 42 won't do. I think I'm going to go with the Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 since it's not too much more htan the Buckmaster for some reason, yet Monarch is Nikon's better line and that amount of magnification is more in line with target shooting.

Sounds like a good choice. Post some picts of your gun and scope when you get them. I'd like to see it.
