MDS or not

Since I'm new to Chrysler ownership I know the knowledgeable folks here can help me. First some history: I have an '05 CV 300C with the HEMI and of course it has MDS (which I'm not thrilled with because I feel the drone when it's working). That's not the problem: My son bought an '07 Dodge Ram, big truck with 4 doors and a HEMI. He thinks he has MDS because he also feels a drone during driving. His truck is purely stock except for a new dual exhaust with a throaty sound. He says the truck only gets about 10 MPG.

I have told him that I didn't believe he had MDS, that only the 300C with the HEMI had it to increase mileage to avoid the gashog tax and that trucks are not included in that survey.

Am I right or not?? Could he have MDS and am I full of s**t.

Keep the faith

The Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi has MDS starting with the 2006 model year. The Ram 2500 & 3500 Hemi's do not have MDS (at least in '06 or '07 - - don't know about '08).

My '07 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x5 (translation: Heavy Beast!) with MDS Hemi only gets about 12 mpg around town, but I have gotten 18.9 mpg on the interstate with the cruise control set at 70. My truck has the factory 20" wheels and 3.92 gear ratio.

However, both of you must have aftermarket exhaust because with the stock exhaust in both my 2005 300C and 2007 Ram 1500 there absolutely no drone. Sometimes I 'think' I may feel MDS engage or disengage on the truck, but no hint at all in the "C". I think this is due to the lower gear ratio / higher RPM of the truck, but maybe I'm just imagining I can tell!

yes the 07 rams with the 5.7 have mds, and i believe all 5.7 Hemi engines now come with mds for 08 and up...The drone you here is the MDS turning on and off...only with an aftermarket exhaust, will be the only way you can hear it, its whisper quiet with the stock setup...and the MDS works, i got 22 mpg avg on my trip to Indiana from Jersey to trade my charger in, 663 miles. i got 344 miles out of one tank, i will miss the efficiency of the 5.7 w/Mds but that all goes away when that 6.1 starts to roar...
