That means that the occurence of autism is 20 times higher now than it was 30+ years ago. It has to be environmental & social issues that are causing this phenomenon, not just "being born with it". I think a parent's lack of nuturing their children from birth has increased these numbers so much. Think about how many families now have 2 working parents compared to the 1970's when most moms stayed at home with their kids. It's truly sad that we have to live in a society where both parents are forced to work full time just to "get by". Their children are the ones that suffer. That's why I feel so blessed that my wife is able to stay home and raise our kids without having to pay an outside child care provider. I hope that more and more parents find the means to do the same thing, at least while their children are very young and prior to being of school age when their brains develop the most. If that happens, I think we'll start to see a reversal of these staggering stats.
There also seems to be a link to certain immunizations that can cause autism. When you consider how long mass immunizations have been around and the increasing occurances of autism, it appears there may be something to it. CNN just did a report on this last week. I also wonder about the possibility of the mother receiving immunizations as a child would have anything to do with this.

Ok, here's what I believe. First the massive increase in autism is due to 2 factors ,the wide broadening of the spectrum disorder to include many children who before would have been classed retarded or not diagnosed at all. Second, the HUGE increase of chemicals and hormones in the food chain. Mercury in vaccinations may play a roll. My Son Graeme is a "normal" person.
He laughs, he crys, attends highschool and at 15 is interested in girls. He does however demand to know what's next, needing to be able to structure his course through the day.
Our family's journey was difficult at first;trying to find a diagnoses in an overloaded health system but through some creative thinking and greasing the wheels we were able to get an all important early diagnoses. At 4 years old, beginning with sign language, Graeme's communication began and from there everyday it improved and he began speaking within months. We were blessed in that we had financial resources to afford private speech therapy and that my Wife was able to devote much of her time to Graeme.
Years later, my Wife has been President of Autism Society of Ontario ( eastern chapter) for many years and is helping parents cope with this issue that affects them, their child, and the community.
