I know where we can get $275million/day in funding for it.

BTW, BOOO naysaying. In addition to this idea, I also think we should devote funding (perhaps from NASA) to figure out how to sythesize platinum. My brother says impossible, I say we used to think you couldn't get smaller than an atom, but now we can, so we should work on knocking electrons and protons off of some bigger atom. Now...we just need nuclear fusion to work to supply the energy....

yep thats what i was going to write...and did you also know that a 5+ mile radius of woods are totally wiped out from the fall out of the mining dust...also you will never get your extra money back that you spent on the hybrid in the lifetime of the car that you thought you where going to save in gas mileage by switching back and forth from gas to electric...

What exactly do you mean by synthesizing platinum?

NASA pretty much has no money right now to do that kind of work. The money they have go towards the return to the Moon program and the trip to Mars work. All other areas of NASA never know if funding will be cut or diverted if one of these high profile groups goes over budget. That is something more for the National Science Foundation.

I know that things are pretty bad around those mines but don't know the exact details but I'm not surprised about that. Usually a hybrid costs about $5k more than it's standard cousin. If you factor in the increased gas mileage you find out that you have to keep that car for at least 10 years to get that $5k back. Most of the hybrids are only good for about 100000 miles as well.

I know NASA is tight up for funding, but it seems to me they aren't doing what they should be doing (mining the moon), so they shouldn't get funding (i.e. I would not be using their funding, but taking it)

By synthesizing platinum, I mean making it in a lab. Yes, I realize this is impossible now, but with money and time...I mean, people once thought that there was no way to go smaller than an atom, and we can do that for some time now.

We're going to need the helium 3 for our moon base that will be set up as a staging point for manned trips to Mars.

Steve, I hate to say it, but you are 100% WRONG! The biggest problem we have is lack of education and people not caring at all...and of course, illegal immigrants. Smarter people = people who know the value of a dollar and how to stretch it as far as possible. Our country is not growing because of a population boom. It is only growing because of illegal immigration. We can combat illegal immigration by procreating ourselves and giving our children the proper education that they deserve, in ENGLISH!!! The illegals are the ones doing the most procreating in our country. That is why we are in dire straights. If we weren't so damned selfish, we would find out that we could combat the influx of illegal immigrants by procreating faster than they do. If we didn't pander to them, they would have no reason to stay and keep procreating in our country.

LOL at encouraging population growth. Too many people as it is is the way I see it. I think if you want to take care of the illegal "problem," just make it easy for them to become legal. Then they'll be subject to the same minimum wage and taxation jobs and companies won't have any incentive to hire them, so there won't be as many jobs for them.

What's the point of such a trip? I feel like it's much more useful to mine the Moon for it's platinum. It's a great catalyst and quite scarce.

Dave,

I didn't say that was the biggest problem..... I said "the single biggest effect we can have ".... meaning "we can have" because to try and get all the people educated, world wide recycling of all recyclable trash, clean energy, etc etc etc will take a loooooonnngg time and be a hard burden for the poor for a few generations... hence the easiest and single biggest effect we COULD have is less folks... too many different opinions on the best course, too many sides, and little compromise... and many folks take the path of least resistance.

Wasn't trying to be as deep as some others ..LOL

Quite a problem all around that will be fixed in time, just not our time. Many cities/towns don't even install sidewalks in residential areas these days, much less encourage by design things like bicycles, walking, mass transit etc. Currently, many forms of recycling cost more to recycle than just mining/making new. Try to fund efforts with tax dollars (which are currently being spent on many frivolous things to many greedy folks who overcharge in the first place, etc) for pollution control and you run into 'socialism'. round and round we go, and we only get an inch.

the pollution solutions will reside in an awakening of the people.... energy solutions are a different matter.
