I have no idea what the point of going to Mars is, except that it's there. there is a lot of platinum out there, the problem is it's in China and Russia.

Maybe if we stopped procreating ourselves and procreated with our spouses, things would be better.

It really is a difficult problem to solve with no real solution out there right now. If you can figure it out you'll be rich.

You know, Arnold was on Leno last week and was talking about 1 the hydrogen highway and 2 making solar plants.

That's almost like discussing religion with your co-workers, except that you work for a church LOL. Like a Seventh Day Adventist working for the Church of Latter Day Saints genealogy database. Or an Anglican working for the Vatican Bank. Folks have their personal beliefs about their gas-saving and pollution-avoiding vehicles, and like to think they are right and the other guy's wrong.

I've also read about the problems with nickel industry, that override or cancel out whatever pollution and gasoline measures that hybrid cars can gain. Well, strike that one, and look for a better answer. Hopefully better solution than ethanol, cause it looks like that is not working either - increasing tortilla prices in Mexico, etc. I have no idea what the next big thing, just that often our measures will always have an impact on something else. And it will be our choice as to which poison pill we take.

Example - the dangers of a nuclear power plant vs. the pollution effects of a coal fired plant - which one should be built because the East coast badly needs some new power plants today. Imagine if we really started putting electric powered cars on the road!

Repeat that all over the world, plus arguments for cheap transportation in 3rd world countries usually heavily polluting (old) diesel-powered buses, ships, etc.

Keep sucking the old fossil fuel (cheap to produce) and use more diesel vehicles, well only a certain percentage of petroleum can be made into diesel, the rest has to be produced as gasoline or similar.
On and on.

Back to your original question, ask your co-workers to do some more research cause you have not been convinced yet that their Prius is doing less damage to the environment than your car. Though I don't think it will change what they think one bit

Well Honda has announced it will be leasing the FCX fuel cell vehicle in California to "qualified" people for $600/month for 3 years. It will be interesting to see how the results turn out.

There has been increased interest in wind energy in the last few years and I think we will start seeing more and more turbines popping up. The down side is that they take up a lot of landspace and don't do much for the view. I think that Texas actually has the largest wind farm in America or gets the largest percentage of energy from wind.

Solar is getting better efficiency wise but it stills needs to improve to make it a cost effective investment for the home owner that wants off the grid. Right now there isn't enough roof space to provide the energy needed for a home especially in areas where it's cloudy or up north where you have short daylight periods in the winter months.

If they really want me to reduce my carbon footprint they should be talking to the city about improved public transportation that makes it viable for professional workers. Right now where I live there isn't a single city bus. Only buses for the college students.

.
Does that include costs for gas, and if you wreck it, do they pick up the tab?

The FCX is so damn ugly I'd use it as a beater car. Throw shopping carts at it, jump speed bumps and stuff.. it'd be awesome!

I have no idea what the price for hydrogen will be for the car. I know right now according to the DOE hydrogen costs about $9.50 per gallon of gasoline equivalent. But they may be getting a break. The $600/month does include all maintenance on the vehicle assuming you following their driving guild lines. Which probably don't include jumping speed bumps, drag racing, or modifying the car in any way.

My plan is to open up a fuel cell car tuning shop once they hit the market in masses.

To me, the coolest part of the Honda project is the home refueling station, but the thing that confuses me is that it runs on natural gas, but the link that takes you to it says "realizing solar-powered refueling stations"
EDIT: Nevermind, I see, it uses solar power with a natural gas backup. I know I'd be willing to lay PV cells on my roof in addition to the station if that meant solar only. I'd also be willing to take a safety certification course if that's what it required to get a filling station at my home.
