Holker Hall (in the neighbourhood) has an automotive museum, with an expansive Donald Campbell section - attached.

Thank you, 'Zilla.

This is now on my list of must do's...

I'll gladly endure a few swan pecks to float that wreath on Coniston Water.

if/when you do manage to come over at some stage, there are plans to show Bluebird to the public again. As usual it comes down to money, but here are a few more details about what is hoped to be done.

Read the Westmorland Gazette article

Agree that it should be dispalyed

Feel, Bluebird should be displayed bodily restored. That would be a monument to Donald Campbell's genius.

Noted the comparison to Dianna's Mercedes. Bluebird is technically much more significant, than a smashed clone Mercedes. Restored it would be view by most through those optics.

The tasteless/macabre aspect would be if the did something stupidly off-colour like leaving it smashed and putting a life-sized accident dummy of Donald Campbell. Never gonna happen. Good.

As I said originally, it is all down to money & particularly if they can get hold of some lottery money to help pay for Bluebird to be displayed properly. When the lottery fund is able to give grandiose London based minority groups (i'm thinking of Opera etc) grants running into millions, I hope that they would be able to find a small grant to help a rural group display a part of our heritage for everyone to enjoy.

So Murph,

What's up with this:

No boaters over 10 mph on Windermere?

You Brits will outdo us in the Nannystate department. Sir Malcom must be rolling over in his (watery) grave.

Geez!

Rick

Hi Rick

This spped limit ban on Lake Windermere has really upset a lot of people. Going back ages they took speed boats off all of the other lakes in the Lake District, but as a concession they let them use Lake Windermere. It was supposed to last forever.
At this stage I'll be careful what I say and how I say it.
Then some people who have moved into the area (The Lake District National Park) possibly/probably to retire get all upset at the noise of people enjoying themselves on their jet skis/speed boats/water skiing while they are enjoying their Pimms on the lawn, crosswords at tea or S&M bondage parties - for want of a better name for them, I'll call them dickheads.
So they decide to complain to the powers that be that people are "actively enjoying themselves" and they look for people to champion their cause. Up steps the Friends Of The Lake District (known locally as the Flat Earth Society) - people with facial hair who wear clothes that have patches on the sleeve. Now it gets a bit tricky. We have a Labour Government and they are always on the lookout for ways to keep the bourgeous rich (people with nice cars, folks that have worked hard for their money, people who like things like speed boats etc ) down. A policy is soon drawn up that will not ban speedboats on Lake Windermere - it will just restrict them to 10 mph. Plus with a bit of spin doctoring the socialists can score a double whammy
by claiming how enviromentally responsible they are at the same time. After a period of discussions (where the huge pro watersport fraternity were patted on the head and told to behave) the new speed limit was passed.

The Lake District National Park Authority had got what they wanted - a 10 mph speed limit on Lake Windermere and no nasty speed boaters upsetting the peace & quiet.

Except for one or two insy weensy, tiny details that the pro watersport people had warned them would happen.
Joe Speedboater no longer visits Lake Windermere and pay the expensive mooring & launch charges.
Jim Jetski no longer visits Lake Windermere and pay the expensive car parking charges.
Barry Waterski no longer visits the Lake District and stays in the hotels.
The Waterbabies no longer come up for the day to visit their friends on the Lake - they don't need to stay at the B&B's anymore.
The Chandlers and boatyards no longer have the boats there to work on and people are losing their jobs.
None of these visitors who used to come up here (& no longer do) are visiting the pubs, restaurants, shops, petrol stations, Post Offices, car parks, Ice cream sellers, etc etc that they used to and these people are having to lay people off or in some cases close down.

This was not forseen by the LDNPA & the local council who have seen a massive downturn in their funding (all predictable and self imposed of course). So the genius that run these organisations have come up with a fantastic new idea to encourage visitors to the Lake District and make their stays more comfortable. They are going to shut down some of the Tourist Information centres and close down some public toilets (& no I am not making any of this up). They would have been better off building a large wall, lining up all of the people who were involved in this folly, giving them each a gun and sending them out into a forest to do the reasonable thing

You couldn't make it up.

MTC

p.s. one of the latest stunts by a leading half wit in the LDNPA was to try and get the RAF & NATO low flying in the Lake District banned as it desturbed the peace. This one even went to Parliament before being thrown out (there was a massive outcry by the locals about this one - the RAF enjoys MASSIVE support for what it does). The pratt that was responsible for the proposed ban was (surprise, surprise) both a former Labour MP and an off comer as well. Why don't they bugger off and leave us alone.

Some people suggested that they should reintroduce power boats to Lake Windermere and get the RAF / NATO low flying increased to hide the noise. Funnily enough theres no sign of that happening either.
