Lovely Leigh in Lancashire

I had my first decent trip out in Arnie today to Leigh in Lancashire, a round trip of about 150 miles. There's not really much that Leigh is famous for, but it does have the worlds largest Indian food making factory, Pataks and it has 7 x Premiership football clubs within easy reach of it (The Mighty Blackburn Rovers, Bolton, Wigan, Everton, Liverpool, Man City and The Scum, sorry Manure, sorry Man Utd).

So what can i tel you about my trip ? Well Arnie ran faultlessly and returned 30.1 mpg (not sure if thats good or not. I would rather it was 35 mpg, but we'll see when he's run in).
I had the good fortune to park next to an brand new E-Class Merc at my meeting and I have a few observations to make.
My cars better than your car nah, ne, nah, ne, nah, nah.
Seriously the Merc looked like Arnies malnourished, anaemic, puny younger brother. I loved it, it was great to compare like with like.

When the meeting was over I had 8 people (who'd been in the meeting with me) crawling over Arnie and argueing about "what" he was. 1/2 thougght he was a Bentley & 1/2 thought that he was a Roller. Noone thought he was a Chrysler and noone would accept he was a Chrysler when I told them.

The kicker is (& I really, really loved this bit), not a single one would accept that the car was mine. It took a full minute of me trying to persuade them that it was before I pulled out my keys and got in. Laugh ? I nearly bought a round of drinks !
& to see the face on the poor Merc guy who had spent £40k on a brand new silver,( surprise, surprise) Eclass that never warranted a second look - it was as Barclaycard would say - priceless.

one thing I have noticed though in my few days of arnie ownership - it's a lot harder finding someone to let you out of a side street/parking place than it was with my Rover 75. The wrong sort of envy perhaps ?

Probably that English class resistance thing - "that bugger in his hoity-toity car - let's make his life more difficult". Sod 'em - you know arnie owns the road.

Better envy of the 300 than letting you in because of pity over the Rover. RIP Rover. or now resurrected as "lowver car China?" (Benny Hill - R.I.P. also). So when do we get the Rover75/arnie comparison - or is there no comparison?

Hi zilla.

yeah it could be as you say, the hoity toity thing certaoinly does exist in England even though UP UNTIL NOW, I had never really suffered from it. For the time being I will gve people the benefit of the doubt and put it down to my view at certain angles not being as good due to the tints at the back. But I'll keep an eye out for it.

I did have a customer come to work yesterday (when I wasn't in), specifically to check out my new "Bentley Continental" and tell me that he would no longer be buying from me due to me not needing his money on account of me now having a Bentley - what a sad git. It really makes me despair at how shallow some people are.

OK. Comparing arnie to my Rover 75 Diesel. Before I start some people may be a bit surprised by some of my answers - please do not be as the Rover 75 was a very, very good car - it was the Rover car company that was pants.

The things that the Rover (known as The Dog) was better on.
Much classier interior (if you like wood & leather, which I do),
better quality material used in interior.
Much better MPG - I used to get 46.3 mpg on a tankfull and the best I ever got was 53.3 mpg on a long trip.
A stacker cd (not an option on Arnie, unless I got Sat - Nav). Better range on reversing sensors.
3 x memory settings on the seats.
Tape player as well as CD player.
The dog was an estate, Arnie is a saloon. The 300c estate while being huge is not a patch on the 300c in the looks category.
Parking !
Being a British car.
Better turning circle
Rubber bottoms in all of the cubby holes to stop things sliding around.
Better positioning of cruise control controls
more tactile switchgear
better turning circle
instant heating of glow plugs
the lack of bonging for every function that the car does or does not do.
cushioned top on armrest
cd holders in armrest
the ignition key looks like an ignition key, rather than a lego cast off
extra storage area underneath the boot shelf
bigger fuel tank
rear demister that came on automatically below 10 deg c
tied on fuel cap holder
I'm sure that there is more but that's a few for starters.

And now the things that Arnie is better on (& don't forget that it is early days).
better ride & handling.
muuuucccchh better performance.
fantastic sound system
comfort
space
Indicator 3 x flash function
2 x keys to operate seat/mirror preferences
EVIC has more toys (via Easter Egg changes) than old computer.
looks
ease of cleaning
quiet to drive (but not as much as you'd mabye think)
zenon headlights
2 stage seat heaters instead of 1
more functional cruise control.
phone holder in armrest
bigger cubbyhole under arm rest
extra powerepoint under armrest
illuminated door entry/exit
green back lighting on dashboard
hi & lo setting on climate control

twin exhausts with chromey tips on them
seeing the pleasure that others get from looking at Arnie !

again there is more, but they'll do for now.

MTC

I see in your member info that you have a "300C CRD". Your saying that you are
getting 30 miles per gallon from a hemi car? Is Arnie a 300C, or a 6 cyl 300?

Jim

Hi Jim

Arnie is not a Hemi but he does have a 6 cyl engine. It is a V6 3 Lt diesel engine and it is fantastic.
This review by one of Britain harshest motoring writers will tell you a bit more about Arnie.

MTC

this article by an Irish motoring guide may help a little bit as well. quite a few of the areas the car gets 5 stars for - including performance.

Mad that all Versions of European cars get the "C" on them.

Glaad that I got the SRT though. Would have gotten black if they chromed it out. But there are a lot of "C" that look like it in bulgaria.

why mad ?

the spec of the car is top of the range (it has various trim as standard that is extra on American models) and they have to call it something.

please remember that in Great Britain until last October, 300c was just 3 numbers with a letter after it.

Now Murphy, Claws in please. Don't be baited by the hierarchial debate. Even now in the UK declairing, " I have an SRT" is likely to solicit directions to the nearest "clinic"!

Mpg?

Is that MPG or KmPG?

Seems like Arnie's "sipping" the gas

Hi Jaydee
It's definitely miles per gallon. I can change the setting into metric for KmPG or even Lt per 100 km that mainland Europe prefers.

But I'm on good ole MPG !
