Borla installed

I had my Borla catback (#112) installed today. Standing at the rear of the car it's just slightly louder than stock when it starts, but there's a low rumble there that wasn't there before. In the cabin it's still only a little louder, but the low rumble is a nice change. Accelerating moderately the CAI starts to open up, as you hit med throttle the rear starts to chime in. Stereo Horsepower Sound!

Around 3/4 throttle the sound from the rear begins to drown out the CAI. At WOT the exhaust is about 25% louder than the CAI. Cruising it's only a hair louder than it was stock, and absolutely no cabin drone. Still unable to detect when MDS kicks in.

I am so lovin' it. I love this car!

I have the same exhaust system, are you having problems with the exhaust bouncing and hitting the cross member? I have rechecked the system a number of times to make sure it is tight but still have this issue.. It is not a constant problem it happens once so often.. I have even put some washers on the cross member to drop it down about 1/4 of an inch..

another Borla installed thread Great exhaust system, but prepare yourself for the onslaught of DRONE posts. People always jump on borlas for the DRONE, and they usually write DRONE in all caps when they do it. I love my borla, and haven't had any DRONE problems.

DSG, the shop used a washer on a nut as a spacer, so there's about 3/8'ths of an inch clearance. It may make contact on a sharp bump, railroad tracks etc., but I haven't heard it hit yet, but of course I just got it installed. Maybe the folks at Borla don't do math well? You'd think they would either adjust the angle of the crosssover, or supply a couple of spacers. I was prepared for this because of reading forums, and it seems a LOT of folks run into this.

No drone at all Joshm. I only recall drone comments made by some that have the big Borla, not this one, but then, I'm getting old and don't remember as well as I used to.

Hi StarJack, Have you driven your car at a steady 70 mph on cruise yet? When you do let me know if you have drone.

On cruise @ 70, with the windows up and the radio off, there is a slight, and I mean slight drone from the rear. Drone is subjective. It's not a resonance or anything, just a slight hum.

However, there's a problem DSG mentioned. The install shop had to use nuts as spacers to keep the cross over pipe from hitting the center support bar. But apparently the clearance is not going to be enough. It doesn't take much of a bump for the pipes to rattle off the support and produce an unacceptable thumping.

So now I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem besides DSG? I watched the install and it was done by the book so I'm confused. Is it possible to get an out of spec set of pipes? They shouldn't have to shim the support bar to get this exhaust installed. I'm not sure if I need to be contacting Borla for a replacement or what?

I got the 112 installed for about 9 months now and I have had NO problem. They used NO washer or anything to lower the crossbar. I think the problem is in the Installation. If installd right there will be no problem. They have to push everything up real hard befrore tightening the clamps. Just my $.05.

Mine has been on for at least 6 months with no problems and no drone at 70 mph. As goose suggested the pipes must be pushed together all the way or it can also hit the spare tire well.
P.S. I'm very happy with the system.

Thanks, spoke with the shop today. Going back in next week and they're going to try to get the pipes raised back up in that area. I have seen a couple of other folks that have had this problem on <cough> <cough> so there does seem to be a gotcha in the install somewhere that occasionally causes this. Thanks for the information!

I had the same problem before I added headers. Try this: with the car on the ground, loosen the clamps, possition a floor jack under the x-pipe, jack the exhaust up as far as you can (until the body starts to lift), tighten the camps and lower the jack. Exhaust should stay about 1" above the cross member. Good luck
