Internals for the exhaust

Okay...I've read pretty much all the treads about this subject on exhaust. Here's my questions: Weather it's the resinator or muffler at the bottom of the cabin not towards the back. On a 300c, is it a straight flow pipe packed in the suitcase and what's the purpose?

Last thing, I've been a all my muffler shops out here in the valley (San Fernando) and they all told me that the resinator is in the middle of the cabin and the mufflers are only at the rear of the car. I've read the opposite on all the muffler thread.
