Superchips using the 87 setting...

Question to anyone using this setting...

Do you use 87 octane on it... or did you stay at 89 octane?

If you did go to 87 octane, did you see much of a mileage gain? Or was there much of a peformance drop (below standard performance at 89? )

Just wondering...

(BTW... I've tried the 91 setting using local 92 octane from Shell.... so I'm not really looking for replies about "why bother with the 87 setting and such. Just wondering if the 87 setting makes much of a mileage/performance difference versus using standard 89 octane gas. Thanks. )

You will lose mileage on the 87 tune, but you can run 89 through it.As long as the octane is at or higher than what is cqalled for you will be fine. There will be a drop in performance as well but you will still have the tranny settings.

Using 89 octane on the 87 tune is throwing money away. Unneeded octane = lost bucks.

For me, the 91 octane tune is CHEAPER to run than the 87. The price difference between the grades has to be some 35cents or more before 87 beats 91.

My $0.02 + tax, title, license and dealer prep.

But by that notion... isn't putting 92 or 93 octane in the 91 tune "throwing money" away as well?

We don't have 91 octane in our Shell stations here... only 87, 89, and 93...

You get much better gas mileage with the 91 tune.Enough so that the difference in price is not an issue.

I ran the 91 tune for a while but i was noticing pinging that was pretty bad so I tried the 87 and don't come acroos it as much. I have a 7-04 build so that may have something to do with it. I talked to superchips about fixing it I just hope I'm able to use the 91 again. With all that said I see somewhere in the low 19s for my average on the car computer with the 87 tune running 87. I'd say that's with about a 80city/20highway split. I honestly only saw a very slight gas mileage increase if any with either tune.

Sure would be nice if they had a 93 tune!

I have had mine on the 91 tune - lots of power but poor mileage.

2 weeks ago I dropped to 87 tune, left the "less torque management" setting on for smooth shifts; moved the shift points back down to 5400 rpm.

I did this because I knew I would be doing lots of highway driving. I racked up 1600 miles of mainly expressway driving. I used 89 fuel and got between 25 and 26 mpg (US gal). I had one 300 mile run that averaged 27.4 mpg!!!

This is a great setting for smooth shifting and superior mileage.

Question Better mileage with 87 tune

I beg to differ with the people who say that the mileage is better with the 91 tune. I have tried both for quite a while. Mileage was actually slightly worse with 91 octane, and I could not feel any performance gains. I would encourage any one getting the chip to first try 87 octane and see if you feel any difference from your stock setting. I could feel a difference immediately. I know higher shift points makes a difference but there must be someting to reduced torque managment that improves performance. I must be the only person with this expereince, or could it be a bias against the 87 setting by people who have only used the 91 setting and permium fuel?
