I am not sure a blend is better than regular oil. Weight for weight synthetic is not thinner, it's cold pour point is vastly superior giving the illusion of thinness. Cold pour can be appreciated even at room temp giving this illusion. This is why cold starts Winter and Summer, synthetic offers superior wear protection at exactly the time when 70% of wear occurs. I showed the arithmetic in another oil thread indicating the cost of syn vs reg oil is $291 over 100K miles.

I noticed that post with the calculations, as I mentioned Ive been doing Synthetic then downgraded to blend... I was just curious to know a bit more, thanks for the clarification.. I looked up other info I need as to the recommended weight and found it in the manual hehe.. I guess I should have started there... we are all leaving a minor detail out when we ask for recommendations, and that is climate temperature for where we live. Thats why it didn't make sense to me when I saw some people were using 0-20, for my temp (Miami) recommended is SH - 10-30, though I could not find the SH one, I had to get SG (I believe)...

By the way, I joined BJ's this weekend, they had a special on the membership of $30 for two cards for 15 months, I know they sell the cases of oil there plus other things I need for the house I got a 6pack for $23.99 of Mobil 1 synthetic 10-30

If I remember correctly on a 0-20w oil the 0 is the viscosity of a 0 weight oil when cold and the 20 is the viscosity of a 20 weight oil when hot. Now if that is the case 20w is the viscosity needed when hot, whether you live in Florida or Alaska. A 30w would be too thick for the MDS to work properly.

Im glad I kept checking back here I'll do my first oil change this weekend, I'll go with the 5-20 as mentioned above... hmmm I hope I have not messed up the wife's car by using 10-30 for a year, I'll check the manual.

Any specific filter brand recommendation for the synthetic oil?

Any of the brand names are fine - they all meet the standards put forth by DaimlerChrysler for engine oil. Valvoline makes one in 5W20. I believe Castrol also does.

No special filters needed for synthetic oil, just use a good quality brand.

Just stay away from Fram, this has been discussed elsewhere.
