Tuning Question...

Hey all,

I have a question about "tuning". I've been reading as much as I can on all of the different sites I can find (300cf, lxforums, srt8oc) and I am still in the dark about a few things.

The main thing I want to know is about tuning. I see the word brought up a lot, and I'm wondering what exactly it entails.

In addition, is there some limit to tuning on an SRT8? Is this different from the 300C?

I'm currently in the process of trading in my 300C to pick up an SRT8, so any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks again, and I apologize is my question is far too newbish!

Interesting. So from what I gather, there's no way to reprogram on our cars (or is it just the SRT8s)? I was reading another thread that Moose replied to, and he said:

Quote:
If you look at the 5.7 tuning that is available from Superchips...at the end of the day they didn't really achieve any extra gains either. That is arguable, but do you see major track improvements before vs. after with a stock motor?

But it is great that they (5.7's) have the tuning from Superchips so cams and other things can be adjusted for. Just look at what Meister has done.
So superchips allows the 5.7 to be tweaked... but apparently no such thing exists for SRT8s? I'm sorry if I'm sounding redundant... I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what is possible and what isn't (and what may never be possible).

I also read something about running the risk of the car running too rich with all of the mods people are doing without the "tune" available. Is this still a big problem, or are people finding ways around it?

So what do these "flash" mods do that I've heard about?

Again, I really appreciate the help/info!

ben...Most mods increase airflow and therefore make the car run lean. Do a search for B&G Performance. They flash the PCM for both the 5.7 and 6.1. The only 6.1 flash that I've heard of to date. For your 5.7 Superchips make the Flashpaq that you have limited tuning ability with and Jet make a chip that you can plug into your PCM for a hardwired tune. Most of the tuners add timing and or fuel. There are other tuners like Split Second that piggyback the PCM for both the 5.7 and 6.1 and give you timing and fuel maps that you can adjust but I've only seen them in conjunction with aftermarket power adders like supercharger etc. Although you could certainly use them as a stand along tuner they would be pretty expensive.

Thanks a bunch. I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on the SRT8... just wanted to be sure there is a bunch of room for improvement (as I learn more and more about tuning and such). I love my 5.7, but I just need more!

Thanks again for the replies. The more the merrier!
