Lake Cutouts on 300 Exhaust?

Hi Guys,

Everyone is talking about pulling off the mufflers, or replacing them with Magnaflows. One guy even ran straight pipes.

Has anyone considered lake cutouts? (Remember those?) I suspect it might be possible to put a cutout just ahead of the mufflers, which would enable you to switch between quiet cruising and uncorked rumble.

Any opinions? Is there a way of making this work?

-Chris

P.S. I really enjoy reading this forum. My 300C is tentatively scheduled to be built in July, and is currently at "D" (not D1 yet) status.

Wink Cutout

I had an exhaust cutout, custom made by my dad, on a 41 Ford street rod I built in the 70's. It was the ideal solution - quiet as stock when cruising,
a pull of the knob gave all or some of the desired rumble. Needs to be exhausted to the side for safety reasons, which could be difficult on new cars due to the exhaust being tucked up inside the unit body. I really miss cutouts, and the realistic J.C. Whitney "locomotive horn" which literally blew an elderly lady off the road once. But I digress.

I think the electric cutout would be the best and cleanest option. With those, you can bolt up a pipe that directs the exhaust out from under the car, so that it doesn't seep into the cockpit on long drives and snuff you. Also you could mount the cutout switch under the seat or somewhere else out of the way to appear stock. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

So, would it go to wide open pipes? Not good. If you had a 2nd system with louder mufflers, etc, then you would have a space problem .... where would you hide the extra piping? Or, I guess you could have it somewhere down the pipes where it would eliminate the last set of mufflers/resonators. Hmmmmmm

Right, that was my idea: Have the cutouts positioned aft of the big x-box/resonator/thingy, but before the dual resonator/muffler thingies. One guy on this board posted photos of how he cut the dual mufflers out and left only the crossover/resonator/big thing in place and it sounded great.
