Ducted AIRHAMMER?

I've looked at photos of the AirHammer, and I've noticed it doesn't have a heat shield. That struck me as odd, because such a huge intake would suck all the hot air straight out of the engine bay. So, not a very 'cold' CAI.

From what I've heard, QLD road laws have some bizzare regulation related to pod-style filters, and requiring them to be shielded. So, I'm going to need to enclose my airhammer anyway. This is gonna restrict the intake something crazy, and I was struck with the idea of ducting air into the enclosure from the lower front facia vent on the right side. The airflow will probably still be considerably more restricted than a normal 'hammer, but I think the exchange of getting genuinely colder air into the engine is worth it.

Comments/suggestions?

it has been shown that by having a "duct" around the open filter CAI's actually raises the ambient air temp going into the filter, because the heat is now trapped between the hood and the "duct"

the location that the filter is located pulls cold air from under the car... piping a tube from the front vents, or removing the lower "bib" will push more cold air in..

Cool. So having it enclosed will make it hotter, but ducting air into the enclosure will resolve that. Awesome, and thanks for the prompt reply.

Can anyone give me some idea as to what kind of space I'm working with? I think my two biggest obstacles will be the front impact brace, and the radiator immediately behind it. I'm thinking of running the duct under both, and coming straight up under the filter. However, this could be a bit of a squeeze, and I'd want a reasonable sized duct for the effort to actually be worthwhile. Is this another 'pipe dream' (pun intended) or can I feasibly fit an air duct in there?

Most people (self included) run the duct from the blocked off area just to the left of the fog lights.. and up thru the OEM hole that is under the stock filter box:

(oh and the pipe size is 3.5 inch)

There's a hole there for it already? W00T!
This whole thing suddenly became very feasible, I'll just have to find a sheet metal fabber to make a scoop and enclosure for the 'hammer filter. The faux vent in the facia you mentioned was exactly what I was thinking about using. I'm getting some chrome mesh inserts for it as well, so it should be quite well disguised, as well as having a passive 'large object' filter. Sounds like a lot of road grime gets sucked into these things, do you think the filter on the Airhammer can handle it?

use one of these for excess water and gunk (goes inline with the pipe up to the filter)

AEM ® Bypass Valve $54.00

it will keep a lot of the crap out without hindering performance.

I don't quite understand how that works. It 'looks' like is placed somewhere along the length of the pipe. If the vacum reaches too high a level (such as when the intake is trying to inhale a puddle), the valve opens and draws in air through the little white filters/vents on the valve piece itself. Makes sense to me. However this won't do much to stop road grime and generic atmosphere dust, which I think the 'hammer will be inhaling vastly higher amounts of, seeing as it will be breathing air directly from outside. I suppose I'll just have to clean my filter frequently.

Well, thanks Mr. iNCREDIBLE. But I doubt those are actually facts. I read the thread that Hammer put together and I won't comment on it.

I say good luck to Hammer in light of being taken off the forums.

Moose.
