Has there been any issue with the location of the air filter when it rains?

I've got the same question/fear. The filter location is pretty high, but is it high enough.

We're talking about this one, right?

High Horse Performance, Inc. GS Motorsports LX Model Intake System

With the filter mounting outside of the engine compartment. Which is why I want it over all the others. And also why we're concerned about it.

The setup is the same on both the SRT and the C. The C rides what, about an inch higher? I remember reading you guys are a lower than we are, stock.

Seattle is a VERY wet climate. It doesn't rain a lot, just often.

I drove around for years with open element K$N CAIs on both my GSX AWD Street car and my AWD 'Trailer Queen'.

I never sucked anything into my engines, this is MYTH IMO. Despite living in California where rain isn't an issue, it does occasionally get wet out here. Being that my street car was a GSX (AWD), I was more prone to drive in the rain than most because the traction w/ AWD is incredible in the rain. Not once splashing about did I ever suck any water.

Furthermore, Eclipse GSX and Talon TSi (Chrysler AWD version) are commonly used for Rally events in insane driving conditions with open element filters and guys aren't sucking rocks or water.

So while I know it looks disturbing that the CAI is pointed to the ground, it's the CAI's job to FILTER. I would say unless you took your car through a HUGE puddle splash of water at high speed, and that water somehow directly soaked your CAI completely, that would be about the ONLY case of you sucking H20 that could damage your engine.

What are the odds of this?

If you get much flooding in your area or heavy rain flow (It appears you don't), I wouldn't worry about it if it were me.

PS,

There are really (2) theories to CAI:

1. If you keep your CAI "Closed", you get colder air but you don't get as much air.

2. If you keep your CAI "Open", you get more air but hotter air.

From my experience, "Open" element CAI's are far enough away from the majority of your engine's heat to where #2 isn't a problem nearly as much as people think it is. Keep in mind also that at speed, cool air from beneath the car makes its way into your engine compartment.

I have tried both and you can definitely FEEL the effects of the Open CAI more than you can the Closed CAI's on the Butt Dyno IMO.

Some people build custom heat shields and IMO this is useless as well.

There is always going to be heat in your engine compartment. If you're worried about it. INSTALL A 180 STAT with your OPEN AIR CAI and you should be all good in the neighborhood.

Good Luck.

I switched from the GSM to the AFE and noticed a huge diff in the way the car pulled from 3500 on. The GSM is a great idea but I feel the pipe size is limiting. I have yet to Dyno myself after the switch but the great intake face off showed that the airhammer then the afe then the gsm were the top 3 intakes in that order. the airhammer made 1-2 hp more then the afe and the afe made 5-7 more then the gsm.

Great info, quick question for you, if the AirHammer made the most RWHP, why not go with the AirHammer? Any particular reason you went with the AFE? Presumably cost?

Thanks in advance.
