Oil filter was loose!!!

So I changed my oil myself for the first time this weekend (dealer did it free last time) and went full synthetic (Mobil 1 5W-20 with Mobil 1 filter). As I got underneath the friggin' oil pan nut was torqued on there so hard I ended up destroying a socket wrench trying to loosen it. Eventually I did and when I moved on to the filter I noticed some slight oil drops on the bottom of the filter and some splatter around the area. I go to loosen it up and the friggin' thing was already loose!!!!! Has anyone else encountered this? I guess I didn't loose a whole lot of oil because the warnings never came on or anything AND I wondered why the idle was rough the last few months. Anyway, did the oil change and tightened up the new filter and the HEMI runs smooth now but I still couldn't believe how loose the old filter was!!!

This is why I DIY, this can happen anywhere. Wifey (before me) had hers done at WM and all the oil ran out less than a block away. They guys pushed it back, refilled, and replaced the previous loose drain bolt.

Regarding that drain bolt, here is a solution that makes future changes a breeze. Click cancel when you are prompted to install Japanese on your computer, it's in English, you may need to hit cancel twice.

If you are using a cheap socket that can happen. Never use cheap tools.

Also, do not over tighten your filter. You might do this because the old one was loose. A loose oil filter will not make your engine run any different, just so you know.

Glad you got her changed...good job.

The socket was actually my father's which he got 20 years ago! Yikes! I then used mine and no problem

ANY Mobil 1 or just none except 5W-20? When I bought my "C", I decided to stay with the dead lizards, but no one said to stay away from any particular synthetic.

Oops -- guess I shoulda read the earlier posts! Sorry.

I just got a Fumoto Drain Valve. It's great, here's a link to the website where I purchased mine. Went with Royal Purple/NAPA Gold btw.
