CAI users i got a question...

i didnt know if i should put this here or in the exterior mods area, but for those of you using CAI's on the 300c or srt8, there are little black plastic block off plates next to the fog lights. i was wondering if any of you have removed them to gain a little more cool air flow for the intake. i just purchased the dub cai from another board user and it didnt include the box for it and i am afraid of just sucking in nothing but hot air right now and am trying to figure out ways to get more cool air up there untill i can construct a box for it. and i sat there and looked at it and in my eyes in theory that it would allow more cool air to go up there after i took out the silencer... anyone else try this or have been thinking the same thing... because i am thinking of doing that today

Most members who had air silencers have removed them to increase the air flow into the engine bay. It would help to increase air flow by removing those baffles near the fog lights as well. Many have added different mesh type mods in their place, some on the outside, some attached from the inside. I have not added any pieces and don't mind the openness since it's dark from the inside. And, I have not had any problems with water being sucked up into the CAI. Then again, my area of Cali only had 6 inches of rain this past year!

Hi GreggK... actually on the SRT8s those areas are direct vents to the front brakes for cooling. On the 300C and RTs (I suppose) they are blocked with a pieces of black plastic.

I took them out on the Heritage edition, along with the air silencer, and also removed the lower side baffle on that side from the radiator. That flows lots of cool air right into the stock air box. Some put a dryer duct down there thinking they will get a "ram air" effect, but that scares me with respect to water intrusion in heavy rain and big puddles, etc.

Here's a couple of pics.

And here's an earlier photochop of how I thought it would look... haven't added the mesh behind the grille yet though...

i think this week i will be experimenting with some pvc going to the very top portion tubing of the air silencer then make a custom body color box (either out of sheet metal or plexiglass and painted using duplicolor) for the cai with a lid on it and see how if i cant get a nice ram air style box made for it. with any luck maybe make a few extras for others if people are interested..

I think I read that the extra wind blowing through the hole will push the plastic wheel well liner against the tire. This happens at high speed. The tire will rub against the liner and eventually cause a hole in the liner.

Only if you remove the large rear section of the belly pan, as some have done to help with heat soak. A better way to deal with the belly pan is to leave it there, as it helps to hold the fender liners. Instead drill it full of 1" holes. The swiss cheese approach will help move air through the engine compartment.

There is also a plastic panel running vertically beside the radiator on the driver's side. I removed the one in mine to get more fresh cool air onto my AirHammer CAI.

Thanks for setting the record straight. There was a thread with a picture of the liner hole, but I couldn't find it.

I found the thread. The belly pan wasn't removed, but the air silencer was. So the combination of removing the vent and air silencer can cause the liner to rub against the tire at high speeds.

Tim, where do you buy that wire mesh. Not the kit that fits in the vents, but the mesh that one can cut on their own.

Thanks in advance.

Moose.

Thanks for the find, Joey.

I guess that if you do any mods in that area, you will have to be certain to ensure that the wheel well liners are reinforced to stay in place.
