I knew it was too easy!

I have had it in the back of my mind to pick up a 180 thermostat when I had some spare time (anticipating that finding the right one would take some time). The other day I had to run into Canadian Tire and happened to walk past the thermostats. There it was, the fabled MotoRad 4127. It was only $11.99 so I just grabbed it. When I got it home and opened the packaging, it looked kind of small. Hit the forum, the thread implied that the t-stat was 63 mm diameter an this sucker is more like 53 mm. Damn! Anyway, I took a picture of the offending t-stat in for the forim.

will it fit into your thermostat housing? You can do the temperature test and see what temp it opens at? If it fit got for it. You running any emmission stuff on your car? Your cat might get plugged fast run the car fatter, more rich at 180 than at the design temp. Thats the only down side to a temperature stat of 180 over the standard 190 deg.

All I know is that's not the 4127. It doesn't have the breathe hole. Here's a thread with pics of the T-stat:

Alternate thermostats for the LX Hemis

Yah, I looked at that picture after I got the t-stat and it sure looks different. It isn't made in Germany like it says in the FAQ, the packaging says it's made in Israel! There was a 4128 package right beside this one and it had a bleeder hole, same make, same packaging style. I know some people just drill a small bleeder hole so I do not think this is a big deal. My biggest concern is that the FAQ says that the t-stat is 63mm in diameter and the one I got is smaller. The difference in cost between the best t-stats and the cheapest is peanuts so I just want to get the best. Ideally, someone from Canada that changed their t-stat would tell me where they got theirs.

That's not all it doesn't have. I thought I would learn more about thermostats from the web and it doesn't even appear to be a bypass thermostat like the 300C requires. Live and learn!

For what it's worth, NAPA part number 532080 is a 180 degree stat that measures 63.25mm; part number 532060 is the same stat in 160 degree (and 532090 is 192 degree). These are NOT listed in Napa's catalog or computer for the 300c so you will need these numbers if you go to NAPA. They are not bypass type (which is probably why they are not listed for our cars) but you could easily drill a small hole in the flange to allow the coolant to bypass. These are the "Superstat" part numbers... heavy duty all stainless construction. The cheaper versions part numbers are 91 (160degree), 191 (180 degree) and 291 (192 degree).

hope this helps someone!

As I understand it, a bleeder hole is not the same as a bypass. The bypass thermostat has a disc on the bottom that opens and closes the bypass so the coolant circulates in the engine block only when cold and allows the coolant to start going to the radiator only as the engine warms up. The Motorad 4127 that I bought and will be returning does have this disc to open and close the bypass. I am determined to get a "Meister" approved thermostat even if I have to order it from the US.

The difference between the 4127 and 4128 is the degree setting.

The 4127 is the 176 degree T-stat

The 4128 is the 180 degree T-stat.

You can order them online at AutoZone. For more info. click on Meisters thread: Alternate thermostats for the LX Hemis

Here is some pictures of the 4127/176 Robert Shaw T-stat I got from AutoZone (it will look the same for the 180 T-stat).

To ensure you have the correct one. Look on the back side of the T-stat.

One side will say Motorad and the other side will say Germany.

Thermostat

Eureka! I found it. I don't know where the MotoRad 4127 designation comes from but on the web site, I cross referenced the Robert Shaw 383-170 to the MotorRad 302-170. I didn't get anywhere looking for it at Canadian Tire. It was frustrating because there was a MotoRad 303-170 that looked about right but no 302-170. Today I went into the PartSource store and they had about the same display of MotoRad thermostats in blister packs that Canadian Tire had and sure enough, there was a 303-170 but no 302-170. Then I looked down on the bottom shelf below the rack of blister packs and there it was. One lone cardboard box. It looks exactly like the thermostats in the formum pictures and says Germany on it. I don't know why it is so much more expensive than the other Motorad thermostats (at $27.99 Canadian) but I wasn't about to complain. Now I don't feel so bad about waiting for the Predator.
