Volant CAI Installed (Pics)

Got the Volant in. Well made unit. What attracted me to this design (other than the looks) was the fact that the entire unit is closed and picks up the air through the left front lower grille. This is very close to the road surface where the air is coolest.

The box holds a very large cone filter that is obviously more efficient than the OEM flat panel.

As to the Looks- you decide for yourself. This is the carbon fiber top. I have dressed it with some chrome trim. It is my understanding that Volant will be shipping the polished aluminum cover to me at some point in time.

The Sound - is great! Quiet at low revs and cruising. Open the throttle body and that deep, throaty V-8 induction sound is there.
I love it! Wish I had a sound clip for you folks to hear.

The Performance - Well, from a standing start, in drive, ESP on, the back wheels lit up. My C has never done that before. Letting the automatic shift up on its own out of 1st, the back tires made a loud, sustained chirp hooking up in second.

The ECU seems to adjusted to the colder, better flow. But I will be happier when I have a programmer hooked up to the ECU to fine tune settings to my mods.

All in all, quite impressive. I haven't measured fuel economy yet. I expect that under normal driving, it will increase because of the improved breathing.

I recommend the Volant CAI for anyone wanting a performance boost. Thanks to TByrne Motorsports for a great group buy.

Hey NR, any problems encountered during install?

I got mine yesterday, but I've been sick so not sure when I'll install it but I'm hoping for Sunday. Oh, and I too got the plastic cover, darn it.
It looks great, thanks for the pics... between you and Angi, now I'm getting the bug to paint my engine cover again but I was going to do my brake calipers first.

Congrats NR, I did mine today, the sound is incredible, far better than the silencer mod I did. At cruise and light throttle it is as stock, moderate to WOT it sounds like, well, a Hemi of all things. It was a very easy install without instructions , someone scanned some instructions in the GPII thread which was very helpful . One point Linda, make sure you clean the inside of the tubes and rubber couplers, mine had dust and fine black particles, especially the tube north of the filter. It really was a piece of cake to do.

My MPG will likely go down since I will use more throttle to hear the engine sing, reminds me of my Alfa a few octaves lower.

The only minor complaint is the Volant on the intake tube looks like watercolor, kinda thin, a nice decal would have been better, NR's looks pretty good though. Also, I hope the cover really is aluminum, a member posted a while back his volant cover on his Suburban began to rust and tarnish within a year, hey NR, don't throw away the fake CF cover too fast. This would be a very easy custom thing to make, hmmm a polished SS intake cover with another Superbird decal, that sounds delicious.

Linda, somewhere TByrne has posted install instructions. Ya gotta go underneath and pull off the plastic belly cover. Make sure the plastic insert behind the lower grille is out as well. I found the only way to attach the downpipe was to put the box in first and do the fitting and clamping from underneath. All in all, not too difficult as Kings has said.

Kings, a Stainless Steel cover would look great - even with a superbird. What about a clear lexan cover to show off the cone filter? Just a thought.

EDIT: Yeah, my mileage will go down as well. Just love hearing that Aaaaahhoooommm induction sound!

I've been waiting for all the comments from the installs of the 2ng GP - good to hear you like the Volant - it's a GREAT mod!

Clear lexan lid would be cool, or paint the silencer box to color match car? hmmm....

Lexan is a great idea, kinda like an F430 showing off it's engine. This could be done for real cheap at any plexiglass cutter, tempered glass woud be even better with a polished edge, any glass shop can do this for minimal outlay. Teak would also be nice, the possibilities are endles. I'll only replace the stock aluminum if it tarnishes, it looks great too.

You are CO-rect on the lower clamps, they simply won't fit from above. I had the lowest clamp at a funny angle and had already installed the bracket and could not tighten the clamp. The flexible snake wrench unit I picked up at Big Lots months ago for $5.00 saved the day, I just snaked the socket around the bracket and voila or I should say Volant!

My friend and I also installed mine today, went well the only problem I encountered was that one of the rubber couplers was too big, the one for the downpipe, just cut it and fit it to the downpipe and was good to go. I actually fit the downpipe first then put the box on, then tightened the clamps from beneath,as long as it works. I took the front drivers wheel off and had the car jacked up before working on it. Can report the same as others, mild in idle and cruise but livens when you throttle up, pure music.

Lexan will probably scratch. I'm thinkin' tempered glass, with a light chrome / smoke finish; rounded, bevelled edges and 4 holes drilled for the mounting screws. Maybe run a foam tape gasket around the underside. Sort of a "Hemi under Glass" effect.
