I agree that you should never hear it, but I did. I unfortunately know that sound very well from having a super charged car prior to this. It eventually lifted a head. lol
Seems like I'm in the minority while searching here, Google, etc. for audible knock on these cars as there wasn't much info out there. I DO know there is a pool of oil in the back of the intake manifold, but I've added a catch can to help alleviate that part of things. Maybe the pooled up oil in the intake is still affecting things? No idea.
With the 91 CAI tune and stock air box, I heard no audible ping/knock/detonation at all on the 1700 mile round trip to Georgia. Took it down the track 6 times like that, too. Once I slapped on the K&N FIPK Monday night when I got back, the audible ping came back. I even went so far as to get gas out here by me instead of in NJ where it's cheaper (BP 93) and still heard it.
I added a ton of fuel on the 91 CAI tune, something like 3%, 14%, 14% (I have to verify for sure when I go to mess with it later) and I don't hear it any longer. I wound up taking out 1*, 2*, 2* in timing but data logging it I'm getting upwards of 7.0 ST KNK at around 5100 RPMS.
I'll probably get to the point that I'll just get a CMR tune to save me the hassle and time messing with it. This thread was mainly for my peace of mind that I wasn't going to blow a car up at the same event, 800 miles from home.....again
Thanks for the replies.
