Inexpensive Exhaust Modification

My 300C looks mean and tough. On a race track, it tears up the competition.
The Volant CAI has a sweet 'big V8' induction sound.

There's just one problem. My exhaust sounds like a DeVille in a funeral procession.

Quiet. Stone cold silent. I can't stand it any more!

Following the lead of a few other members, I took the plunge last week. My Black Beauty went up on the hoist. The 2 big rear resonators were surgically extracted. Two straight pipes were pressure bent to shape. Then 2 Reactive 4" tips were welded in place.

Lowered the hoist. Everyone from the muffer shop standing, waiting, listening. Fired her up. A sweet, deep, bump bu de bump bu de bump bu de burble issued out the back pipes. A big V8 awakening from a sleep. Gotta love that sound!

Blip the throttle - stand back - a menacing growl spits out - echoing through the work bays.

They all want to hear it on the road under full power. I circle the back streets and pass by the shop along the main road. WOT -serious power; kick-butt acceleration - and a sound that has jumped from the flames of Hell.

I circle back to see a bunch of Midas monkeys with silly grins on their greasy faces.

Job done.

Yeah, they're happy, but will it pass the wifey test? Friday, we head out on a 1000 mile round trip to a family gathering. I start up inside my garage. No comment. Roll out with mild acceleration - some exhaust note - again no comment. 20 minutes later, I pull out to pass an 18 wheeler - 3/4 throttle. the beast jumps forward with a roar. After the pass, my wife says, "Boy, does this car ever move!"

The car is still quiet at cruising - a distant exhaust note but no drone or resonance. No difference when going into 4 cylinder mode. No more comments about the sound - but she is used to me having noisy cars in the past.

Lots of positive comments from my relatives - especially the burble on idle.

I am happy with this inexpensive mod. Even if I go to a "tuned" system such as Borla or Zoomers, the resonators would have to come off.

Will I go to a fully tuned system? I'm not sure. Once a good chip programmer is out there and we can see some dyno numbers - I would go to a full system and headers - if a significant power boost is to be found.

The headers will make the burble at idle so much better. Deeper and louder. I put the borla 140125 on my magnum and thought the idle was fairly nice. Once i put the headers on, it sounded like a real v8 muscle car. and the power, OH THE POWER!!! +35 horses is an awesome feel.

Cost me $190.00. would have been less but I wanted the 360 degree clamps - 2 @ $36.00. then some pipe ($30.00). Rest was labour.

Almost every speed / aftermarket shop sells Ractive tips. Autozone; etc.
These are a round, rolled tip made from T304 Stainless Steel with the Ractive Logo on the top side - Here's a link to the Manufacturer

T621 - The tip is comprised of T-304 stainless steel and features the Ractive signature polished mirror finish.

T621 - 4 INCH RSR STYLE SLANT CUT TIP

Hope this helps.
