modding the volant intake

Hey all,
I'd thought I'd share my experience with my mod. I covered the large hole and really small hole on the Volant intake and found that not only was it more quiet, it also responded better. From my butt dyno it feels like I've gain better responce and power. Keep in mind that this is only my opinion and that I want no bashing or bull *%& replies to this message.
Thanks!

Not bashing...or calling BS, cuz I'm interested as I have one too...

But if you covered both holes, where does the air come from!??!

Hows your gas mileage? Less air...less gas? Less HP!

If you look in the box where the air filter is you'll see a really small hole next to the washer fluid thing and a large hole behind the head light. When I was cleaning my filter I noticed that the holes would still allow for hot air to come from those two locations. All the air now comes from the bottom where the 3" tube, that was supplied, directs air from.

Easy E,
Really not less air. The 3" tube is large enough to supply plenty of air and you have to keep in mind that the box that it comes in give the cone volume more space to draw from. More cold air = more power if this mod really had any. One thing that I also like is that it's a hell of a lot quieter and more responsive thus it feels like some power was now gained.

FYI,
One last thing, I used left over sound deadener to cover the holes. It has really good adhesion and a smooth surface.

I don't understand why that huge square hole is there. I think they are just reusing some other car's mold that happens to fit in the 300C.

That hole is absolutely essential and must never be blocked under any circumstances.

Here's why. The cold air pick up is down by the lower left grille, inches above the road surface. When you drive through standing water deep enough to submerge the air opening, the engine will suck that water up and in - not good!

The Volant engineers created the small opening up high on the side of the box as a secondary relief opening in the event of water or blockage in the main(lower) intake. Under normal operation, the air will come in the path of least resistance, which is the lower opening.

Hope this info helps clear up the mystery of the second opening.

Being the fact that I live in California and drive the AWD (about an inch higher) I don't foresee any problems. I also have a custom lower grill that I made to block any large objects from entering the lower tube.
I still am experiencing the better responce. This mod is not for everyone I suppose.

NR,
Thanks for clearing things up. I kinda wondered about that.

LOL

We've now got our Hemi beta tester lined up to report first-hand the effects of a cold-water douche directly into the throttle body.

Whatever you do, Turbohips, don't forget you've got an inverted snorkel the next time you ford a dip, or even drive in the wet.

I'm fearless, but I'd personally make that a grudge-match-only or braggin' rights mod, then open 'er back up.

But then, as NR says...

Meister,
You have to keep in mind that my car is about 1.5" taller than the RWD but also I live where I live. I highly doubt that my car for any reason would face the harsh weather that would concern me. Even when it rains it only comes down like a soft shower. Put it this way, I've gone through high presure car wash systems and haven't had any problems.
