RKE Battery Low

Three weeks ago after I started my car in the message center was RKE Battery Low. So I bought a new one and every thing was OK. The other day I get the same message so I stop at Radio Shack to have them check the battery. We take the screw out I pop open the back and the battery and the retainer both fall out. The dealer is ordering me a new key no charge under warranty. I'm glade I had my other key with me or it would have been a long walk or tow back home.

I wonder if it needs a battery for the key to work? I thought the battery just powered the remote buttons.

When my new key comes in the have to program the new one and reprogram the old one to. They cant program the new key to the old it`s a new one for them and I have 3 keys so they have to do all three. The program in the key lets the car computer know that it`s the right key so it will start.

The battery only operates the keyless entry, panic and trunk open features. The transponder (Chip) does not need a battery source to operate which will close the comunication loop for vehicle ignition.

You can't fix stupid and thats the truth ruth!!

Thumbs up

Oh, the RKE battery is for remote door lock fob, eh...? I started getting the error message that said, "RKE Battery" on the car information center last week or early this week. The error message goes away after a couple of minutes of the engine running. Now, I am getting the "RKE Battery Low" message also.

I had no idea what the error message was all about. Could find nothing about it in my owner's manual. Called my dealer's service dept. about it but they did not return my Saturday call. Called back and talked to my salesman who actually KNOWS the 300C [ ] and he had never heard of the RKE battery either. The service dept. was gone for the weekend, by this time, so he is going to check on it and get back with me on Monday.

Is this a common battery that I can get from the drug store battery rack?

Thanks,

StCassel

Is this a great forum or what?!?!?!? Got the answer I needed with only a short search.

After replacing the RKE battery, does the key have to be reprogramed?

Thanks

Let the battery go dead in the remote and see if that is true. Dead battery in the remote = no start.

And no it doesn't need to be reprogrammed when you change batteries.

The transponder does not require a battery, Ive started them with the battery removed. Transponder works the same as a transponder for Mobil speed pass, or toll transponders like Easy Pass.

The remote battery is a common watch type battery you can get at most stores, and the remote will not need to be reprogrammed after replacing the battery.

Hi guys, you may want to check this thread is well Inoperative Cruise Control it started as an inoperative cruise control, but the problem with remote key fob is also discussed. Long story short, this problem will most likely start to effect lots of people. The soldering on the remote key fob is not of good quality and the retainer to hold the battery has been falling off. I had mine fixed and it works great now. If you remove the battery, the FOB does NOT need to be reprogammed. IF you are getting a new one, it will need to be programmed. You will need the label off of the bag that your keys came with. The code to re-program them is on that bag.

Question

How do you get into the key fob? I was expecting to use a little phillips screw driver but, there is some wierd head on the screw of the fob. I have no idea what to use to get into the key fob to replace the RKE battery.

Thanks,

StCassel
