Intermittent HID Headlight Malfunction

I've had my car about 1.5 years, no problems other than a rear speaker replaced under warranty. Stock HIDs

The other night, I was driving home and my lughts seemed to dim dramatically, then went to full power. It happened one more time moments later, and just then I was pulling into my driveway. The pattern on the garage door told me the drivers side HID was OUT. High beams seemed to both work based on the pattern.

I got out of the car and confirmed that the dirvers light was not lit.

When I put the car away, it was back on. I played with the key fob and it came on like always.

It was late, so my underhood check consisted of cojnfirming that there was nothing I could reach from above.

Last night, they caem on when I started the car and as far as I could tell, stayed on the entire time.

Anyone else have anything like this? Is the HID failing? What's a replacement bulb cost?

Doesn't sound like a bulb problem.

You should probably take it do a dealer. Even if you get the dreaded "could not duplicate", at least you will start a paper trail. Intermittent problems can be a real pain.

I'm dealing with that same problem right now. Supposely the headlight switch is bad and is on back order. I doubt that will fix the problem.

Hid turning off

ok so a few months ago i had a problem with my front left HID cutting off and on. Usually when it turned off i could turn the lights off and on and then it would come back on again

But then it got worse and worse so i took it to the dealer. THey replaced the ballast for the HID and it worked fine.

3 months later it;s doing the same thing again
By the way i have factory HID's

Has any1 had this problem? I don;t see how the ballast could be bad again. It must be something else...

Here are a few posts that may help. You may have already seen them. I’m sorry I don’t have an answer to your problem, but it seems that many have had something similar happen. Fuses, ballasts, wiring harnesses all seem to be culprits in the problem area. I wish you luck and keep us updated on what you get for the fix.

I'm bumping this up, this seems to be increasing in severity. After 20 minutes or so, the driver's side low beam shuts off, completely off, then, either on its own or because I have fiddled with the manual on/off switch, comes back on, only to go off again. I really like my car, but this is bogus, and looks like crap.

I was able to photograph this for the next service trip, I basically don't want them returning the car unless it's fixed.

Has anyone else had intermittant headlight malfunction? If so, what was the resolution?

update

Both of my Stock HID's have started to blink.

I took it to the dealer. THey ordered the bulbs, which have the chrome box behind it, which is the ignitor for the HID.

However, the bulbs that came in have a more yellow looking tint than the stock bluish HID's.

But they have the same part #. THey are trying to tell me that Chrysler switched companies from Philips to Sylvania, or vice versa, and the part # is superceded.

THey're telling me there is no way to get the same bulbs i came in there with. I would not have paid $695 or whatever it was for the HID option if i knew i was gonna have yellowish lights.

My car has been at the dealer for 7 Days and i'm pissed!

Angry

I too have the same LEFT (Driver Side) HID out. They are OEM HIDs from Chrysler.

On sometimes and off sometimes. Seems to happen when I break or make a right turn so intially I thought it was a loose connection. I borught it to the dealer and of course I got the "We can't duplicate the problem" crap!! They suggested letting a tech take the car for the night (I almost passed out laughing so hard). BTW, the my problem also started after about 1.5 years.

I am going to take the car back in and bring these pages with me. Another positive power of the forums.

Has anyone had a POSITIVE experience with the dealer and this light problem?

Let me know, Drum guy, and good luck. I for one snapped a phone picture of the light out, showing one lighted, the other one dark, so they can't pull the "can't duplicate" crap.

Citadel,

I was actually going to video tape the problem to show them. My thought is, drive to the dealership with the lights on (I always go during the day and they aren't on) and there is a good chance they will be out. When this started happening I was SUPER PISSED, not becuase it is such a big deal, but because I knew this was going to be a fiasco with the dealership and less than stellar service center.

I really love my car, it is enough to piss me off but not enough to make me regret my purchase.

I will keep you guys updated.
