Problems with AutoStick???

Ok gang,

My C now has about 3400 miles on it so I decided to start driving like it was meant to be driven (up until know I was babying it). Anyway, I find that for some reason, when I use the AutoStick, I have trouble with the 1-2 shift. For example, 1 winds out nicely, but then when I click it, there is hesitation and then it shifts from 1-3, seeming to skip 2. I don't know if it is my novice ability or if my tranny has a problem. The only real issue would be in a race, obviously when it hits 3rd it revs low and I loose momentum. Please help a novice AutoSticker out!!!

Maybe you're holding the shifter to the right a little too long? Make sure you just give it a quick tap otherwise it'll start upshifting if you hold it there for more than 1 second.

Don't know why it would skip 2nd, unless like Arnold said you are holding it to the right rather than just tapping it (most likely that's the case).

As far as the hesitation, I assume you mean that it doesn't shift when you move the lever, but a couple seconds later. Mine was even worse downshifting, entering a curve for example where I wanted to downshift BEFORE the curve , not half way through it when it's already too late. The cure for that is the Superchips Flashpaq. Now my Autostick is not the worthless curiosity that it was in stock form; it actually shifts when I tell it to! (up OR down!). Plus I can select '5th' now, just like the SRT8 guys

First of all, there is a noiticeable drop off in the stock 1-2 shift. Magnumfreak dynoed a stock shift from 1-2 and recorded a loss of nearly 150hp from the hesitation, so it is not your imagination, nor is it a problem with the autostick. (THe Superships Flashpaq tuner will eliminate all hesitation with the shifts on the 5.7, -but that's another thread)

As for the "missed" gear, you may be tapping twice when shifting. It is somewhat sensitive and you should only have to bang it to the right once. Try consciously tapping once until you get used to it. If it still occurs, then I would have your dealer take a look.

Hope this helps a little

Chas

I find that my 2000 S430 shifts way faster than the C (same action but a much softer spring load making the shift a flick of the fingers). The tranny in the S seems much better developed (programmed), albeit the S makes much less power.

You are shifting too late, it takes lots of practice with the tranny hesitation to get the 1-2 shift right. I used to do the same thing, shift a little earlier and you'll see the results you want to see or just drop it to one and don't shift maunually at all . The car will automatically run to the redline and shift itself.

What he said!
I think your bouncing the rev limiter, its auto shifting to 2 the same time your tapping it to second but actually sending it to 3. My.02

Thank you

Thanks everyone for the valuable input. I have been practicing and have found, as many of you stated, that if I shift a little earlier, the problem is eliminated. I am also considering buying the flashpaq but had some concerns with it. I posted another thread under "not too happy with superchips". Let me know what your opinions are on this matter.

Thanks again
