Unhappy Engine ping - knock NEED HELP

Hey guys,

I noticed yesterday night for the first time ever a really horrible pinging sound start coming from either my engine or another component in the front right area under the hood.

I was cruisin around last night when it just seemed to start all of a sudden. At the time of this drive I was running 93 octane with the 91 superchips tune. When it started to worry me I pulled into a gas station and immediately set my car back to stock (thinking it had something to do with the SC). However, the ping/knock still remains and I have no idea what the deal is. Checked my oil levels and they were fine too. It was late when I got home so I just went to bed and decided I'd look at it in the morning when the engine was cooled down, but it is still doing it prominently.

The noise gets faster and louder when I accelerate and press the pedal. Also, when I am cruising around and then just let the car coast the noise stops. As soon as I hit the pedal though the noise starts again. I can let it coast down to about 15mph until it starts to make the noise again on its own.

I have absolutely no idea what this means and would appreciate any input from anyone. I've never had a problem with the car in the past so I'm kinda worried what's up with it. I am currently uploading a video to maybe give some insight and let you guys here the sound....hopefully it sounds clear enough to bring some more light to my situation. I will post link as soon as it finishes.

Thanks again to anyone who can give me some advice.
-Joe

whose supercharger are you running

Whose supercharger kit did you use, actually more importantly did you change the heads when you did the supercharger? Are you blowing any smoke on startup? These were signs that I had when I dropped a valve guide.

If it is not a mechanical noise then does it ping at all engine speeds. Usually pigging will occur under acceleration (engine loaded). If it is always then maybe bad gas or weak fuel pump. if under load then richen up your aux injectors.

Just some minor ideas, good luck

I do not have a supercharger, but thanks for your information. It only pings like that at idle or when I am accelerating.

That's not a "pinging" sound related to fuel grade. It does sound like a lifter but it could also very easily be an exhaust leak. It's often hard to tell those 2 sounds apart. Also you mention you can't hear the noise when you are just cruising, only under load. That says "exhaust leak" to me.

I would check to make sure the nuts that attach the exhaust pipe to the manifold are tight, and also look to see if you have a cracked exhaust manifold. This should not happen in a car this new, BUT if you washed the engine compartment when the engine was hot the cold water could cause a hot manifold to crack. IF it's not somthing simple like loose exhaust nuts then set the tune back to stock, and get it to the dealer asap and have it fixed under warranty. Don't drive it like that because if it's something in the valve train you could cause further damage. Oh and leave the stock tune installed for now and don't leave the flashpaq in the car, or mention it to the dealer.

Update

Hey guys thanks again for the input. I took my car in this morning and got a call from the dealership saying that it was a lifter problem and that they were gonna take it apart today or tomorrow and repair the problem.

My next question.....is this a rare occurence? I mean by no means do I rag on my car nor have I ever even put the wear and tear of taking it to a track. It seems like there's no way in hell something like that should happen after only 18k miles. Was that a factory defect? Is there anything I should be concerned about once they "fix" it and I get my car back?

Thanks again fellas!
-Joe
