Engine light is on.

My engine light (the little picture of an engine) came on yesterday. I did the trick of holding down the two buttons on the steering wheel to see if there might be any info that would help. I found a couple of things that I thought might be usefull. The first:

last VTA trig= 2
last wake = 16384

And the other is:

Last Chime Req
mil lamp
VMM 319

I also read throught the sticky about the diagnostic codes. So I tried the trick of on, off, on, off, on to see what diagnosic codes might pop up. I'm not sure if I was doing it right, but no codes displayed on the dash.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I've done the on/off/on/off/on/off/on thing several times. I've done it fast. I've done it slow. I always make sure my door is shut and still no codes. I don't even get the "-----------" display. Is it possible this is something that was added in later models. I have a 2005 300 C purchased in November 2004.

Thanks.

It sounds like you've done it correctly, but just to be sure, here is the procedure you need to do:

- put your key in the ignition
- turn it in quick succession to ACC ON ACC ON ACC ON
- if you have any codes they'll be displayed in the EVIC

That fact you're saying the engine light is on yet there's no codes displayed in the EVIC is a mystery to me. Try it one more time. Maybe you didn't do it quick enough.

To reassure you, I think what you're seeing is perfectly normal. I have pretty much the same information except instead of "mil lamp" mine says "abs". My VMM is also 319. It's ALWAYS said that from day one and I don't have any codes or engine light.

Back to the engine light...have you done any mods to your car? Is it running normally or is there something you're not telling us?

If there's nothing that can't be answered, I'd suggest taking your car in. Good luck!

Bernie

Thanks for the reply. The engine light went off after about four or five days. I have not made any modifications to my car. I'm not experiencing any issues with the car that would lead me to believe I'm having an engine problem (other than the light). I can't think of anything I'm not mentioning. The car is a 2005 300 C with 70,000 + miles. I burn the medium octane gas as suggested by the manufacturer. Since the light went out I won't worry about it unless it comes back on.

Thanks.

Mine keeps recurring with a 'P0128' code. Something to do with the thermostat (I bought the car used a few months ago, and, to my knowledge, the car is completely stock so I doubt someone replaced the thermostat with a 180.) and the engine not getting to the proper temp soon enough.

It goes out eventually, then comes back maybe a few days or a week or so later. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make this annoying behavior go away, I'd appreciate it.

If it's the same thing for you, I doubt it's anything to be too concerned about.

My engine light has been coming on and going off lately also. This morning it was on, then after I filled up with gas, it went off. Try taking your gas cap off then putting it back on, turn it at least 5 times. This might help.

That for sure will cause it. Matter of fact there's been a few cases of faulty gas caps here in the past. I turn mine till I hear a dozen or so clicks.

You could have had any of a dozen codes that cleared after several days. Try practicing the on/off 3 times pretty quickly and you should get the codes display. I had to try a few times before I got the timing right to see it and I also had a code that cleared before I could get to the dealer. When it happened again, I drove straight to the dealer, left the car running outside the service entrance and told them "you have to come out and look at this before I shut the car."

I have the thermostat code as well. Car's done 42K miles. I have cleared the code a few times with my Flashpaq, but it keeps coming back. Guess I will go to the dealership and see what they have to say about it.

You may have a t-stat that is coming apart and sticking open, resulting in slower than expected warmup time.

Like this:

Note how the rubber material has come apart and is stuck in the opening allowing coolant to flow continuously.
