stalling after gas fillup

Well it has finally happened to me. Car has started dying after filling with gas. I have read many threads on this subject but now it hits home. I have tried not topping off, filling very slowly, tightening the cap several turns and even leaving car running while filling (not very safe).

Went to dealer yesterday after filling car and have it die several times. He (the service adviser) stated they had another that did the same and after replacing the fuel tank it solved the problem. He called the company I have my extended warranty with and they said NO it was not covered. He then talked with DC and they are willing to cover half the expense of replacing the tank. I asked about this being a environmental issue as well as a safety issue and he said it would need to be engine or converter involved.

He stated the tank would be $500 and with installation my half would be $400. I told him to order the tank. I asked if the tank also included the purge solenoid, the canister and anything else needed. He said Yes.

I went from there to the car lot where I purchased the car (4 months ago) and talked to the business manager and they agreed to pay half of my bill.

So I guess it could be worse. But I must get this fixed. This is a huge safety issue when it dies in the middle of intersections while waiting to turn and nearly get run over. The dying happens several times before it finally stops. I love the car but this issue must end.

This forum has supplied me with facts to use when dealing with dealerships and for that I am very thankful.

Keep the faith.

Sounds like you went about this in a very well-informed and organized way. You got caught in one of the first-year production glitches that all cars went through.

As I understand it, your cost will end up to be about $200. Not bad.

I assume you have carefully read through your extended warranty, but
I have the Chrysler Maximum Care extended warranty and the tank is covered.
Here is the verbiage from the extended warranty.

ENGINE COOLING & FUEL: Cooling Fan, Clutch and
Motor; Radiator; Coolant Temperature Switch; Fuel Pump;
Water Pump and Housing; Fuel Tank Sending Unit; Fuel
Tank and Lines
; Serpentine Belt Tensioner; Seals and
Gaskets.

Well after reading it more closely it does state the fuel tank is covered. My extended warranty is not with Chrysler but with a independent company. After determining what my coverage was (elite plus) I realized that it was covered.

The catch is my deductible is $200. So I may go back and start over or stay with this arrangement and wait for the next time. Although I really hate to let the warranty company off without any expense.

It gets to be such a hassle to deal with these people. Thought I was finished with the haggling when I retired, but guess not.

Thanks for the help.

Keep the faith.

If it were me, I'd rather let the car lot off the hook instead of the warranty. For the simple reason that the car lot was at least being reasonable (after all they didn't build the car or cause the problem) but the warranty company took your money and then tried to deny a legitimate claim. I'd call their bluff.

I'm curious though, how many miles did you have before you had this problem? I figured I was off the hook on my nearly 3 year old "C" since I've never had this happen. I've only got 10,300 mile on her though.

harley,
I just wanted to make sure you have read through this thread since you have a 2005 model. The fuel management valve seemed to be the underlying issue rather than changing out the fuel tank and solenoid.

Well Keven; I have 36K miles on my '05 300C. I bought it in August last year with 32K and never had a problem until recently. I have appointment to have the tank replaced Jan. 17th so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this fixes it.

Love the car but hate it when I have problems. Just like stated earlier that may be a result of buying the first year production.

Keep the faith'

Bruno, is the Fuel Management Valve part of the fuel tank? I asked the service writer if this was the fuel tank and any items attached to the tank and was told YES. If the FMV, the purge solenoid and the charcoal canister are not part of the tank I may be in for a long day. I asked that they fill the tank after installation and drive it. Hopefully if it's going to stall it does it while they drive.

Thanks for the Heads Up on the Fuel Management Valve. I will mention it to them when I drop the car off.

Thanks again for everyone's help. This is a great forum.

Keep the faith.

I have no idea where that particular valve is located. Hopefully, someone else will come along who can answer this question.

However, I do feel that you are a little better armed before going back to the dealer. Please keep us informed of the service and if it was successful.
