The SGII player will not read past 255 mp3 files. Anyone know of an update?

255 is the designed maximum number of files. It is specified in the owner's manual. I state this in case you missed that part of the manual and realized the 255 limit by trial & error.

Yes, I did miss that in the manual and no, 255 files is not enough for me: if it fits on a CD then, gosh darn it!, it should play it as do all my dvd/mp3 players. Seems like an arbitrary software limit.

This is due to the limit that an 8-bit binary number will represent (Obviously not controled by Chrysler - this is a defined std). If you are a geek, then you already know that this is 0..255. If you want to figure it out, here is the way to do so (an explaination of binary to decimal conversion)...

Each bit represents a 2's exponent value (starting from right to left) where the first "bit" (1 or 0) is = to 2 to the 0 power [read 2^0] - or the "ones" position. From there on, just add 1 to the power - so the 2nd digit (angain - 1 or 0) is = to 2^1 (or 2 decimal when it's "on"). So just add up the bits in position and you'll get the decimal value.

Note: 2^2 = 4 : 2^3 = 8 : 2^4 = 16 : 2^5 = 32 : 2^6 = 64 : 2^7 = 128

So... 11111111 = 1+2+4+16+32+64+128 = 255

There are 10 types of people in this world that understand Binary. Those that do and those that don't.

>255 = low quality mp3s

I've been converting my audio cd's into mp3s for a long time now. When I burn mp3s to just one cd, I could only get around 120-150 songs. For the reason that I convert them to cd-quality recordings. Now, if you are able to get more than 150 songs, then you must have low quality mp3s among your compilation. Don't rob yourself with low quality mp3s going through your speakers, use at least a mp3 file with 192 bits. Trust me, I use to think that there was no difference in sound quality in a smaller file but if you listen you could tell the difference.
