Unhappy Oil problem with hemi

Hi guys sorry if this is a 300c forum I dont know anywhere else to go. I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7 hemi. I bought it on Dec 19 2007 at 42000 miles the car ran perfect, I just got a oil change from my mechanic like 3 weeks ago he put in 10w40 and i started hearing some clicking sound at the bottom of the car sounds like between the tranny and engine but its not engine noise, my mechanic told me I have to wait for the oil to break in and the weather is cold. I realized that Ive been getting less gas milage and that clicking noise is still there, Now recently like an idiot I found out I have to use 5w20 so I just got my oil changed today and the noise is still there but the car runs a little smoother. Any body knwos what the problem with that noise is ismy mds messed up? If anyone can please help tht would be greatly appreciated by the way the new Oil i put is castrol 5w20 Full Synthetic

Can't help you with the noise, but you can go to jeepsunlimited.com and click on the Grand Cherokee WK forums. Tons if info there. No need for you to apologize that you didn't know about using 5w-20 ONLY in the Hemi. Now your idiot of a mechanic should be the one to apologize, I assume that you made him pay for the additional oil change, right. By the way, regardless of what your manual, mechanic, or dealer says, The '05 WK with the Hemi takes 7 1/2 quarts of oil to fill it, not 7 quarts.

About the only thing I can suggest is to try the MDS recallibration procedure that's been posted here. I don't have MDS so i have no personal knowledge if this works. Can't hurt to try it though. Good luck!

I'm not Rambit, but...

WOT = wide open throttle, as in Floor it!

dtcs = diagnostic trouble codes. They come from the onboard diagnostics modules of the cars (OBD or OBDII, as in OBD 2nd generation)

StarScan tool:
Quote:
The StarSCAN™ Diagnostic Scan Tool is an electronic service tool produced by the Chrysler Corporation and supports diagnostic services for the Chrysler Group CAN-equipped vehicles.
That's from DCCTools. Here's a pic.

(CAN =
Quote:
Controller Area Network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a computer network protocol designed to allow micro-controllers to communicate with each other and with a host computer. It was designed specifically for automotive applications but is now also used in other areas
from Wikipedia.)

Hope that helps, and welcome! I'm not much newer here than you (although I'm a lot older, darnnit!). This place has a ton of information and the members here are the friendliest, and most helpful of any forum group I've ever run across. (I think that's reflected by their taste in cars!)

You should also be aware that the 5.7 Hemi is not the quietest engine on the planet; they all seem to have some "hemi clatter" or "Hemi tick" as it as also been called. i have 2 of them and they both make a little noise; question is whether or not yours is abnormal for this engine, and what type of noise it is. Since you mentioned being a "newbie" to cars and the noises they make, I would recommend you check out some other vehicles on the lot and see if they make more or less the same noise as yours. That would tell you if your Jeep has something abnormal going on or if it's just the normal "hemi clatter".

By the way, I really don't think using the 10w40 oil could have done any lasting damage; MDS may not have worked and in cold weather it won't circulate as quickly (which could explain some extra noise on startup). But you should be ok now that you have the 5w20 oil in it.

You might wanna look for another "mechanic". His statement that "the new oil needs to break in" makes me just scratch my head in amazement. And NO MANUFACTURER has recommended using 10w40 oil for the last 15 years or more. 5w20 is still a little new for most folks; by far the most commonly specified weight these days is 5w30 - - so I could almost cut your guy some slack if that is what he had used (except for the fact that the OIL CAP on your engine says 5w20!).

Welcome to the forums and good luck!

yea the i cant hear the noise on startup when the car gets warm then you start hearing it, i doubt it hemi clatter i know the regular noise on the car this noise is abnormal because when i was getting lojack installed at bayridge chrysler jeep dealership in brooklyn I asked the mechanic whats that noise he kept telling me he doesnt know but he doesnt like it so Im thinking should i bring it to the dealer ship for a free diagnostics checkup? also is there anyway to tell if your mds is dead like with the starscan tool or would an engine light show up in your car if mds is not function properly or at all? this forum is really helpful and all you guys are really helpful by far the best forum ive been at

what is this "hemi tick" you keep talking about,my hemi is as quiet as a mouse, maybe its because its a UK model or I'm just lucky.I've had the car over 2 yrs now(from new)and its not baby'd at all but still no tick, does that mean mines good?or is it bad because it doesnt tick?

nah your good I wish i had my car like yours with no tick but theres a ticking/clicking noise in my hemi jeep since my mechaninc put 10w40 oil and the ticking is coming for the bottom of the car where the oil leaks out of when its getting changed so I was thinking can it be the oil pump/ filter the oil pressure system also Im bringing it to a jeep dealership to get a diagnostics on thursday do they use the starscan tool like the one above?
