Engine Problem Today

I've had a trouble-free ride until today at lunch time. I was driving on a side street and the car started bucking and hesitating like it was out of gas. I came to a stop and it didn't stall out. I drove again and it did the same thing. Then the engine light, ESP and BAS lights came on. After that it started running smooth again, but maybe just a little less responsive to the pedal.

I got back home, shut the car off. When I switched it back on the engine light stays lit, and the other ones are back off. Idle is smooth. I didn't try to get any codes yet, but I guess I should try to get those first in an effort to diagnose what the problem is.

Has anyone seen this happen to them?

PM Mr. Incredible. He had a quick fix for a similar problem that involved re-teaching the PCM the throttle position.

I think that might be the "ignition on,press gas pedal to floor and release, then turn off ignition" method,if not pull fuse 11 for 20-30 secs then drive it like you stole it,that does numerous little resets for the "C"

Rock Auto has one for $8
More Information for STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS PC758
and one for $87
More Information for AIRTEX 5S1942

In the mean time, the car has been running fine and the CEL just turned itself off. Should I just replace it anyway? Which one?

Of course, it got complicated. It seems there are at least 2 different styles of crankshaft positions sensors used on 300Cs, and different parts sellers, and perhaps Chrysler too, are mixing them up. As far as I can tell from checking around, 2005-06 have the bigger connector with "ears", and 2007-09 use a smaller one. The one I pulled off my car has a part number thats supposed to be on the 06 model. And the parts place sent me the part with the smaller connector, because thats how its listed on their site. Sheeesh!

So this is a heads up for anyone who is replacing their own CKP sensor on an earlier car.

Did you try just checking the connection on the sensor? Peek at the wiring and make sure nothing is damaged if you can. I thought most cars wouldn't run with a faulty cam or crank position sensor. I guess I was wrong.

The sensor connector has the red sliding tab that keeps it on tight. I actually had some trouble pulling the connector off, until I pushed down on the wire end (towards the engine) while pulling.

I finally got the right replacement piece, installed it and all is well.
