Couldn't the action of ripping on the velcro create a spark?

I doubt it; Velcro is cloth. I have been using this process for over 6 years on my '99 LHS (built in 4/'98), so personally, I feel safe in using it..

ROFL.

THIS ENTRY HAS BEEN UPDATED AND CORRECTED.

As mikeyjohn just said, not unless you buy one.

Mopar sells them for $41.45 list at most dealers. I'm sure that it can be bought somewhere at a discount. BUT, be sure it is the Mopar cap because the threads are unique to the car. Mopar part # is 5015636-AB, CAP FUEL 14086035.

Also, and very important, that price should INCLUDE the lock cylinder and rekeying by the dealer. (You use your ignition key on this cap). But don't expect a non-selling dealer to rekey your cap to your car for free. You may get hit with a charge for rekeying, typically about $30.00 more.

Thanks Mileshoover that is great information.I did notice the key in the picture looked like a 300 C key but I would have never thought that it was. That is really cool and worth every penny.Mileshoover can I purchase the gas cap before my C comes in then have them rekey it and is it a long process?

I wouldn't know why not. Just go to your dealer and find a knowledgeable parts guy. He'll probably have to order the cap because it isn't likely to be in stock yet. It took about 4 days for mine to come into the dealer.

I watched my parts gal do it; she used the procedure for setting up a new key which is described in the owner's manual, so maybe you could do it yourself also, But why bother when they should key it, particularly if it is the dealer where you buy/bought your car? And, nope, it didn't take that long, 20 minutes or so.

Note: The cap has a tether just like the OEM one. The tether is plastic, held into a smaller hole in the bodywork at the front side of the cap. DON'T CUT IT OFF, just pry it out of the hole carefully. (I used a waterpump pliers). Then keep that OEM cap to replace the locking cap when you sell the car. The instructions that come with the cap will tell you as to how to install the new tether for the locking cap. Placing it onto the cap is sort of like a vinyl/rubber jar cap which must be squeezed onto the circumferencial edge of the cap and calls for a bit of patience. Just be cool and it'll all go well.

That locking cap will fit any new Chrysler LX model you may buy in the future. I moved my former LH model cap over 3 models, from '93 to '99. I intend to do the same with this cap and rekey each time.
