Make certain the gas cap is fully secured. Otherwise the engine will cut out.

Concur.

Dealer recommendation from 2 different dealers is go 5 to 7 clicks past where it feels snug--it's critical that the cap be very tightly secured.

I have to concur with NR. Even if there is no apparent indication, replace the gas cap.It may possibly be flawed and with time simply doesn't seat properly.

Funky lends a hand

Toothdoc, one of our sister forums is blessed to have a very knowledgeable, helpful, Dodge tech in residence. I took the liberty of running your problem past FNKYCHKN and here's his response:

"...i would suspect a leaky duty cycle purge solenoid. as fuel is pumped into the tank, the vapors from the tank are pushed into the canister, to be burned as part of fuel mixture during a normal drive cycle. the PCM cycles the purge solenoid valve to allow vapors from the canister to be introduced into intake manifold. if this valve is leaking, the amount of vapors cannot be properly regulated and may result in an overly rich condition which could cause idle undershoot and stalling.
another thing that could affect mixture is the canister being saturated (usually caused by overfilling tank).
TSB 18-031-04A deals with rough idle after hot restart.
good luck."

This doesn't mean that you don't have to keep your fuel cap super tight, BTW.

Gang,

Most new car tech's will tell you to STOP filling your tank when the automatic hose shuts off on its own. Your (our) continuing to fill after that does just what is stated above. That's bad. One thing that they have also told me is to fill on SLOW instead of fast and air will leave the tank and not leave air pockets causing the pump to shut off early.

Excellent, practical, everyday usage, application of Funky's comments, mpeasl, thanks.
