Angry Transmission: Slip / Slow Acceleration

2008 300C - Canada. Up North Eh.
(110,000km) .. yeah yeah.. I know. It's all highway!

Last week I was driving around for about 10 mins (30 Celcius, Dry Day). I turned right, then all of a sudden, felt like no power. (there was no wheel spin. It was dry and I drive like grampa now). I gave it more gas and the engine would rev to 3K (half throttle) but the car was hardly gaining speed. This lasted through one more light till I could pull over. I pulled over. [P]. Shut off the car. Start It up. [D]. Then drove off no problem.

This week after having driven for about an hour (28 Celcius, Raining), I stopped at a light to turn left (previous turn was a right). It turned left turn green. I look behind me and truck is bearing down on me expecting me to move. I gently push on the gas pedal, no acceleration (no wheel spin). I mashed the gas, rpms jumped to 3 or 4K but acceleration was nearly nill and I was almost rear ended.

I tried slap stick left,right.. no upshifting (or down). Made the corner flooring it
(and I almost didn't make it through on the light cycle!)

I pulled over. [P]. Shut off the car. Start It up. [D]. Then drove off.

It feels like the Traction Control is kicking in (but with no indication that it is).
** No the wheels are not slipping **
(but even then, with wheel spin it usually cuts the engine.. not limit the RPM)

Symptoms that show up:

Gentle Gas Pedal. Little to no Acceleration
Floored Gas Pedal (RPM's stick to 3K or 4K). Very Little Acceleration.
Slap Stick will not shift down or up.
Traction Control Light is not flashing. (and the wheels are not spinning).

** speculating (it happens after right hand turns). This could be coincidence

That last event scared the lights out of me. It's going to Chrysler this week.
I expect to hear the standard "We can't replicate the problem and give us 100$ for checking it out".
Of course you can't replicate it. It's RANDOM! It took me a week of driving it to replicate it!!!

I'll keep everyone posted on this.

Sounds like your car is going into "limp mode". It sounds like an intermittent fault since restarting resets performance to normal. You can try the "key dance" routine to read the trouble codes. Switch your key on/off 3 times (not starting the car) to read any codes and post here to see what they mean. Also, you could go directly to your dealers after an incident and have them check the codes. If you keep driving through a number of driving cycles without the trouble showing up, the codes will probably be erased and you will have to wait for the event to happen again. Perhaps you could drive somewhere where there is not much traffic and try to reproduce the problem.

Have you checked the fluid level? Have you noticed any red fluid on the ground?

i had a very similar problem which was recently resolved.

i got code p0016 initially which means either the crankshaft or camshaft sensors are not wokring properly.

so to fix this they first changed the MAP sensor. that didnt fix the problem.

then they changed the ABS module, that didnt completely fix the problem.

finally they changed the PCM and that has fixed the problem.

im not saying this is exactly what will do it for you, but atleast its a start

(i made a thread in this section, its called code p0016)

Robaustin: Key Dance does not work for me. I followed this:

1. Start with doors locked
2. Unlock the doors with key fob
3. open door, get in, close door
4. stick key in ignition.
5. turn key to on position (position just before starter engages), turn to off, turn to on again, turn to off, then to on and leave in on position (all in less then 10 seconds).
6. wait a few seconds and look in odometer for info

Nothing. Just shows the odometer.

Hemi31: It was just in for a servicing 100K check. I see no fluid on the garage floor and the bottom looks dry. If the transmission were slipping, then would the rpms not jump to redline? Or would the car go into LIMP mode if it detects slip?

M@ndrake: Will try key dance again if the problem occurs again. So far. No Check engine either.

Update: Happened again today. This is what doesn't work.

Slap Stick. No
Turn off ESP with Dash Button. No change.
Full Disable of ESP with Key Hold. No Change.

Pull Over. Put into Park. Then back into drive. Take off no problem. (no shutting off car required)
(I should have tried rolling neutral)

Figure it's just getting stuck in final gear. And not kicking up when I come to a stop.

Update: Speed Sensor for the Tranny had to replaced. No more problems since.

** just before they fixed it. I got stuck in second. Permanently. no amount of restarting would take it out of limp mode.

Had to have the speed sensor replaced in my 2006 300c last month. I am at 92,000 miles. Had same problems as yours. No problems since.

speed sensor

has anyone changed the speed sensor themselves? where on the tranny is it located? i'm having the same problems and it sounds like an easy do it yourself fix(if i know exactly where to find the sensor). any info people would be great.

Hi everyone,

I have an 06 with 34k miles. I recently had the issue happen to me twice. 2 on two different cold days, the car struggled to move under acceleration attempts.

Both times I attempted to make right turns off a stop sign on days where the weather was below 25 degrees. Both times, the car would rev up to 3-4k rpm with only moving slightly. I attributed this to a slipping transmission.

I immediately took the care in for service (purchased car used with 4 yr bumper to bumper extended warranty) and described problems. The service writer worried me that if they could not replicate the problem, that I would be assessed a fee of 199 dollars plus rental fee costs.

NOW TO THE POINT.

The technician experienced the same occurrence (also on a cold day) and proceeded to check trans fluid. Trans fluid was noted as low and the trans pan was dropped. Once the trans pan was dropped, the tech noticed metal shavings in the fluid and in the pan which prompted them to say there was a failure.

I had do approve a $1300 (to be paid by warranty) fee to disassemble the transmission to locate the cause of failure.

I was notified today that the results of the tear down was a defective oil pump in the transmission. Dealer is replacing the entire transmission.

I have sought hard for the past two days with mixed results on outcomes. Some have stated that this "slipping" is normal operation and can be found in the owners manuals. Other have stated that this type of behavior of the trans is a serious issue.

I will post more results when I am told of next steps. My advice is to have your transmission checked immediately if you experience this issue.

Best,

Mike
