well back in the job market again...

for those that read this:
http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=56672

Firday our VoIP system and internet system went down. I arrived at work Friday Morning at 8:00am.. this happened at 5:30ish I work 8-6 with an hour lunch..

I was at the office until 9:30pm waiting for Appia to bring the system back up, I was told by my boss I could not leave until it was back, but I have a 2 1/2 daughter, and my boss knows this... at 9:30 I attemted to call him and tell him that I had to leave, he didn't answer his cell.. I left WTF could I do on a Friday night

around 12:30am my boss calls me back and says I need to get back to the office, well first off I already put in a 14 hour day and second I was in bed as was my little girl. I told him NO, there are 2 other people in the department, call one of them.

This morning I was "written up" for failing to follow orders because I left Friday and refused to return...

So I quit... Sorry but no way am I dealing with that bull****e

so i'm unemployeed again...

Phuck...

2007 has not been my year thus far.... I think I am getting a little cranky in my old age, I don't blow off stuff like I used too. I am really starting to hate Los Angeles and really wish I could get out of here. But at the moment that is impossible due to child custody restraints......

Marc,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. But as you demonstrated, family comes first. I only hope that the insensitive jerk that decided to "write you up", has a similar experience some day. Let me guess, he called you from home didn't he? It is unfortunate that so many people tend to lose the human side of themselves as they advance up the corporate ladder. I am certain that you will find something soon, from all indications that I have seen, you are a talented, creative individual and won't be down for long!!!! Good luck in the hunt! I'll keep in you in my prayers!!

PD

Jeez, bad luck should be your middle name lately. Sorry about that. I can't help but wonder what the labour laws are where you live. Although I can't quote you the exact time frame, there are laws in Canada how many hours down time all employees are entitled to before being called back to work, military and emergency employment of course excluded. For some reason 8 hours rest comes to mind.

Personally I think you'd have a case for unfair labour practice for lack of a better term. We have provincial Labour Boards up here, and you probably have a similar agency in your state that can advise you where you stand on this. I believe you've been wronged and suggest you look up your labour laws. Good luck Mr.i

Mr Incredible,
I am sorry to hear of this. It seems to me and this is just my opinion, that some big companies have lost sight of family values. I work for such a company who does not care if you have a family, they come first. It is up to us to rearrange our lives to fit the companies needs. It is sad to see hard working people having to pay the price because they have families. One day the table will be turned on them, let's see how they like it, I assure you they won't. If I were a single parent I probably wouldn't have a job right now, my son comes first. I refuse to give up my values...family first.
You did the right thing IMO. I applaud you for your actions! I hope you can find a company to work for that has a little more compassion. You are very intelligent and should have no problem finding another job. You have overcome alot of obstacles and this resent set back is just that, a set back. You will prevail!

Just curious - what are the consequences for being 'written up'.

Regardless, I'm glad to see you standing on your principles and values. I'm a young guy in the workforce and surrounded by folks who are willing to go the extra mile at ANY cost. Well, I'm all for going to the extra mile - but not at ANY cost. Its nice to see people like you still exist! I'm sure you'll be back on your feet in no time.

So much for the cool boss that also drove a 300 !! Family ALWAYS COMES FIRST...........I would have done the same thing . What about starting a small company in your field to offer the services to smaller companies who can't afford such full time- full benefited employee's . I'm assuming you are in some kind of IT capacity(or comparable). Can you be a part time consultant to a few companies in this regard ?? Sounds like making your own hours , raiseing a little own by yourself , would be a dream . You can be cheaper than the competition , keep your overhead down , use a home office ( a tax write-off usually). Is any of this possible ? Or find a boss with a heart and a soul !! Good luck either way and keep your head up .

Hi Mr I, it's such a shame to hear of what happened, i'm sure with your genius and enginuity, finding a job should not be a hard task. Yes big companies have lost sight of family values and unfortunately with alot of young people willing to do anything to climb the ladder, they have lost sight that most people have a life outside of work. i remember when i used to work for one of the largest investment banks in the world, 14 hour days meant nothing to them and they still expected more. i now work in a smaller company that still has global reach. i have flexible hours and can easily take time off for emergencies as such. i hope you will find a better solution after this.

Marc,

Sorry to hear about the recent set back. My hat comes off and I bow to you for putting family over dollars in this situation. I'd have done the same thing. You're only blessed with so many children but jobs will come and go. I'll keep you in my prayers and wish that you find a speedy replacement in employment with a more understanding boss.

Chris
