dreaming of a limited slip

for the first time I have really wrung this car out. I have had it for months and never found the right place and time to really go crazy in it.

well, last evening, me and my bro-in-law were out looking for trouble and found a completely empty medical center with acres of new asphalt and absolutely no one around anywhere!

man, did we whip her around. ESP on and off, launches from stop, launches from a roll on, lots of 2nd gear HARD corners, limit braking, etc. spent about 15 minutes just flogging the girl hard. Nearly boiled the tires off! We sure striped up their new parking lot.

I now have more respect than ever for the car, but with ESP off in some of the slower hard cornering there was a real lack of traction. Car launched very well in a straight line, just when you really flogged it into a corner in first or second you could have done more with a limited slip.

By the way, my BOL is still grinning!

First time I have ever wished for more. I guess that's just the way it is. You ALWAYS want more!

Waiting for the GSM traction control & fan mod.

Lack of a "limited slip" differential is not the issue here, Steve. Your ESP is still enabled even with "ESP off". You were feeling the effects of the ESP system correcting your intentionally-induced yaw. Pull fuse 17* and repeat your antics and you'll find you have unrestrained power, and are leaving identical twin ribbons of rubber. Just as you would with a "limited slip" differential.

And you'll also have the rear end passing the front end if you keep your foot in it, guaranteed, so choose your test location with care.

Then install the GSM mod as your first mod and you'll be able to go from mild to wild and back again with a mere flip of a hidden switch.

Happy driving.

*Applies to cars built prior to August, '05. For the more recent cars, pulling fuse 17 does not disable ESP - the Stage II GSM mod is the only known means, to date, to fully unleash your Hemi's power.

Perhaps a bit more detail is in order. No retard was noticed until around 15-20 degrees yaw! This required higher and higher entry speeds until we found the TRACTION limited speed, not being reigned in yet. Then we applied power. DEFINITELY had inside rear wheelspin at extreme enough yaw angles for my BIL to worry about the price of replacement wheels if we hit a curb! Note that this was new smooth asphalt and relatively slippery. Actually could feel the throttle retard, but could not detect the individual brake applications that are supposed to occur.

As a club racer and 35 year enthusiast I absolutely assure you I can feel when the computer alters my power demands, and there was no intervention until we were WAY out of shape. SRT engineers definitely changed the ESP calibrations to allow a lot more craziness!

Too much fun! Soon I'll be able to upgrade tires!

But the craziness is still being controlled, as you indicated.

If your car is a recent build you'll have the 3-mode ESP. If so you'll be able to further reduce, but not eliminate, computer control of your car's ability to lay down its full power to the wheels.

The mod will allow you to remove that control entirely and enjoy the car without restraint.

Lack of a limited slip? I thought all SRT-8 vehicles came equipped standard.

While the SRT8 diff is pretty bulletproof the diff is not Limited Slip

The slip (wheelspin) is managed electronically:

Traction control system (TCS)

This part of the Torque management system senses impending wheelspin and applies brakes on one or more wheels, and reduces engine torque output using the electronic throttle control (ETC) to prevent wheelslip during acceleration , in cases of severe wheel slip this system will use the brakes and the throttle control and finally interrogate the ECU to determine what torque output is at and will “partially close” the throttle blades, and reduce timing to give torque reduction. It may also affect shifting as a final means of correcting the torque output.

Brake assists system (BAS)

This is part of the Torque management system that applies the brakes with the throttle control so that the computer is not just relaying on one system top achieve the torque management.

I dont mean to steal your thread, but since you brought up the idea of having to replace your tires soon.

Does anyone know what is the widest tire that can fit the stock SRT8 rim(back) but still has the same overall diameter as the stock one (so that your speedometer doesnt get messed up). Also will not cause any issues with rubbing the fender?

Thanks

I have spoken with Scott at GSM and he has in the works, maybe available a Quaife Diff with gears. Having experience with Quaife there are None better for both Drag Racing & Road Coarse Racing both, they handle a Ton of power and allow traction to both tires even in a Radius without favoring the inside wheel. Excellence at a price, yet worth it. I'd like to see performance results with 3.27 and 3.42 gears and see what they are worth in 1/4 and how much they lose on top. Now the Aftermarket needs to provide much stronger & lighter axles to compliment the new diff.

I have 295's on my car and there is no clearence problems.

Oops... sorry, you said "stock" rim... I dont know for sure, but I dont think I would go any larger than 265 with the stock 9" rim.

Id be willing to bet that the SRT guys have quaiffe locked up, like they did with the SRT-4. Exclusivity with Mopar.
