Speed Limiter on 2006s?

I just happened to be flipping through the latest (I think) issue of Road and Track and noticed that they had a Long-Term Test write-up on their 2006 300C SRT8. Other than the amount of gas this beast drinks, they LOVED the car.

However, they made one comment that has me a little confused. They said "But in a car that has an electronically limited top speed of 165 mph, we're happy ...".

I was under the impression that these cars had their top speeds limited only by their redlines (or lack of aerodynamics). Am I mistaken, or is the author of this article? It's probably a moot point since I'm not likely to go over 165, but I liked the idea of not having big brother there to limit my fun.
Maybe the 2005s had no speed limiter but the 2006s do?

no speed limiter...
several fellow forum members have hit the magic number of 173...
more than once...
so it just must be with that particular car and conditions...

Not guilty

Kind of creepy though, wonder if I've become psychic?

and I had not read this R & T article.

EDIT here's a link to it sure enough says electronically limited to 165. Time for camera/GPS verification and rub their noses in it

MY 2006 SRT goes about 2000 RPM at 65mph .
At a redline of 6400: If you could get to 6400 in top gear (5th), the car would be travelling at about (6400rpm/2000rpm) X 65mph = 208 mph at redline potential in 5th gear .

CONCLUSION: There is more gear to go faster ; the 165 mph limit (if exists) is electronic , or else if it tops between 165 and 180 the limiter is likely horsepower .

my number are approximate, but hope ya get the drift .....

===========
Another point:
Assuming the original R&T article is true , that the 165 mph is top, and the 5th gear is turning 5550 rpm, and the rear end is 3.06 ; one could run a 3.55 rear end, and raise your rpms at every speed by a factor of 3.55/3.06 = 1.16 , or 16% higher. Thus, 5550 X 1.16 = 6400 rpm approx , so you'd get max redline at the 165 limited top end , and bang thru FOUR gears in the 1/4 mile, not THREE, which might improve times by a few tenths. Has any one tried this yet ?

Well it turns out that the GC srt8 has a speed limiter at 155. The word is that if it were taken off, it could do 170. So if the jeep has a speed limiter, I don't know what that says for the other 2006 srt8's.

I can say as an absolute fact the CSRT8 does not have a speed limiter of 165mph. Travelling across the state @12:00 midnight last week - Wide open road and I decided to open it up. Was still pulling and let off at 172 or 173mph (Too focused on the road to stare @ the speedo, so just glanced). The real issue of these cars at that speed is stability!! Not the most confidence inspiring car with the "Billboard" front end.........and that is why I let up!!
By far the fastest car I've owned for top end speed though!!

I think that the turbulent forces, causing possible instability and lift at high speeds, would be proportional to at least the square of the speed and possibly the third or fourth power of the speed. So 170mph is a lot different than say 150mph. My old 911 started feeling twitchy in the front end (though not unstable) at 110mph. I'm still breaking in my CSRT8 (500 miles on the clock now) and haven't been over 100mph so I can't speak from experience. But I would say that the CSRT8 does pretty well to be controllable at all at 170. Did it feel unstable at 160?

Mine feels solid as a rock at 163!
I'll report back on how she feels at 173!
