2006 M5 vs 300C SRT550

Today on a private test track in Texas. We were able to match up a recently completed 300C with our SRT550 package on it against a new M5. A recent issue of Car and Driver lists the M5 as being a 12.4 @ 118 mph car in the 1/4 mile.

Anyway, the SRT550 gave the M5 the move at a 75 mph roll. The M jumps out 1.5 cars and the race is on. Giving up the jump start the SRT550 had to play catchup but by 110 mph the cars were even with the SRT550 steadily pulling. At the end of the test the SRT550 hit right at 160 mph and was 2-3 car lengths ahead of the new M5.

The new M5 is a highly impressive car for bone stock. Anyone who has one should be really impressed with how quick they are. Its also nice to see that a well modded SRT8 can give them a good run!

John (if I may call you by your first name):

Have you had a chance to test out what your mods would be like on a jeep srt8?

75-160mph race? Not real world, but interesting nonetheless.

Would like to see 0-125mph as an indication of 1/4 mile times.

I drove an M5 recently and the one thing that anyone interested should know...you can't burn rubber with it. Nope...ain't gonna happen.

It is very fast. It handles very well. Cabin/road noise is intrusive. Nice to read that for $15K (at still 1/2 the cost) we can stay with the Break My Window M5 crowd.

Thanks for the post John!

The M5 and the Hennessey SRT550 are not "real world" cars. The only place you can really enjoy the capabilities of these two fine automobiles is on the track, imo.

Put 17.5 grand worth of performance mods into an M5, then I think it would be a little more appropriate to compare them in the same post, in my opinion (no offense intended).

I've tried both M5 and M6.. they're abit too powerful to run tests against :x As i recall the SRT550 package has no supercharge/turbo/stroker kit (i think x.x) If you can run tests against the Mercedes E55 AMG that would rock.. cuz usually we always compare sports cars to the E55 (what can i say it set benchmark standards :P). Thanks for the info John !!

I disagree, it would be more appropriate to put 50K of performance mods into an SRT8 so the comparison is between cars costing the same. Still the SRT8 is a larger car with more passenger and luggage room.

But can one even do useful mods to the M5? It's a highly complex engine. My impression is that it's already tuned within an inch of its life!
