Lightbulb Extended Warrenty Question

I just receivwed a mailer for a DCX maximum care service contract, where they are asking for $1579 for 5 years or 70,000 miles whichever comes first.

It carries a $100 deductible, comes with stuff that's less important to me and covers brakes but not pads or rotors ( )

Your thoughts please

When I bought my 300C SRT-8 (8/24/05) I extended the warranty to 100,000 miles and got the service plan for 5 years or 70,000 miles. I paid $2500 for the extendedwarranty and $500 for the service plan. Both are from Fidelity, through the dealership. I also got gap insurance for $500. The service contract covers oil changes every 3,000 miles (13 oil changes), a coolant flush at 45,000 miles, and brake inspections (no pads or rotors either). Part of the reason I got the service plan is the fact that the dealership has a record of the scheduled maintenence being performed. If I ever munch the motor it's less likely that they'll be able to deny my warranty claim.

I think $1579 is way too much. Ask at the dealership about Fidelity. They issue a coupon book which can be used at the dealership or any Pep Boys or anyplace else that will accept the coupon then wait to be paid by Fidelity.

The rest of my vehicles get oil changes at Wally World (Wal-Mart). Full synthetic for about $35 including topping off fluids, setting tire pressures, and vacuuming the front andcleaning the windshield.

$1579 is a little high for the offered contract, but I'd advise against an aftermarket contract...always safest to stick with the manufacturer. Check out eservicecontracts.com for a lower rate on exactly the same thing the DCX mailer was offering you.

I would also do a quick search on Extended warranties. You will see an old thread out there where there was a ton of discussion. I used John Ristow who works for a dealership in the midwest. His info is all there. Many forum members have used him. He was the best person to deal with. Do a search on John Ristow and you will see the threads.

p.s. don't ever buy an aftermarket warranty. I did thru 1sourceautowarranty.com and they just went bankrupt. Now my '99 Vette has no warranty and I am our over 1k.

I don't know what you're looking for in a warranty, but know exactly what you're getting into beforehand. I agree 100% with Johnny Vig about not going with an aftermarket one. They have fancy names and it looks too good to be true, especially the price. If it seems like a really good price, read the exclusions & conditions VERY carefully.

You may want to consider getting your oil changes etc. as part of your warranty as well. You should consider the deductable as well. $0 is good. You could spend a lot of money for trips to your dealer for warranty issues with a $100 deductable.

Here's a link to my warranty through your dealer - Extended Warranty Options/Prices

Check over at the LXforums. Someone posted a dealership doing this for $1k. Like buying anything...it is all about negotiation.

Like I said, make sure to read the details & exclusions. Any company charging that little amount is not giving anything away free. I'd personally like to see what's covered just for interest sake. I'd also be interested in feedback from anyone who's had a claim AFTER the basic warranty has expired. If it's from a 3rd party...RUN AWAY FAST!

Just for reference, at the time of purchase (usually a little less when bought then) I got the Chrysler Maximum Care 6 yr 70K mile $50 deduct. warranty for about $850. (Cost was $750 then, it's more now). Assuming you've purchased your car recently, you should be able to get the above for around/under $1000 max, and I agree 1000% with what was said above, go with a Chrysler MaxCare only, aftermarket warranties can be a NIGHTMARE.

remember...
that the SRT has a mark-up to the normal warranties offered on the "C"'s, so keep that in mind when you are comparing numbers...
