Cable Guys

So I read some other threads where people have problems with their cars and sometimes I think sh*t happens, then it happens to me and I can really relate much much more.

Day before yesterday 4.30pm there is just me and the dog in the house. SRT8's in the driveway cooling down. I'm in the basement smiling. The dog starts barking; he hears something and continues to bark. I figure that something outside excited Dogzilla.

So I go to the front of the house, and see 2 cable guys, with TV feed cables draped right across the roof and hood of my SRT8. My first words were "What the f**k do you think you're doing".

One of the two cable guys - one at the house, and one up a street pole, says they are just updating the line -The cable guy at the house said “Well I knocked on the front door and no-one answered” as if that justified their laying the cables over the SRT8.

Then guy up the street pole decides to drag the cables off the car from his pole position. I forcefully shouted at him to stop. My actual words were "Hey sh*thead quit doing that you'll f*cking damage the paaaaint" His co-worker told him to stop, and come down, and together they should lift the cables off the car .

Then I saw some scratch marks on the SRT8, I am usually very very controlled, but now I was shaking with anger -amazing how emotionally involved you can get with a car. Strangely though my thought train was fully logical.

I asked for business cards; they have none, so I go into the house to get paper and pen to record their names. When I returned the cables were off the car, and the guy who was formerly up the pole has come down to my car, and tries to wipe the scratch marks off with his sleeve. I told him in my best police officer voice "stop, get away from the car, and don't touch it". A bit like the Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) line in Aliens as the alien queen advances on Newt "Get away from her, you bitch!" ...

Cable company was called, and I found installer was a sub-contractor. The supervisor called the next day and offered to "take care of it". Not at all reasurred I started to cross examine him and it turns out his "buddy" owns a the body shop that's going to take care of it. "Not a chance" I said I'm going to the Chrysler dealer. I will fax or email you a quote. He reluctantly agrees.

Well cable guys you got lucky. The dealership's detail shop -with no appointment- hand washed the car, and yes even the service manager was soaping up the car - he said that was because it was an SRT8. Then after carefully drying it they examined the scratches. Then with absolute care they hand polished out the scratches preserving the clear coat - all at no cost. Even though I insisted someone else would be paying; the dealer insisted on no cost. What a great service department, what a great dealer experience.

I think these two dope head (yes really) Cable guys owe them a twelve pack or two. Don't you?

That's the difference between BC and New Mexico. I have a backhoe... and a gun.... and LOTs of empty desert...

Sorry to hear about your car.

(PS. Just kidding about the gun, OK?... the backhoe digs a DEEP hole.... )

goddardzilla,
Wow, what a terrible thing to happen! I am glad you had a good outcome to the whole incident but that still doesn’t excuse the stupidity and ignorance of the cable guys. Like you, I would have been seething, trying to maintain control of my feelings. Glad to hear you also had a good repair experience with your dealership.

Your story reminds me of the yearly battle I have to face with my power company that hires out sub contractors to yearly trim branches away from poles and lines. You won’t believe the damage they have done to my driveway with their huge lift trucks. The stupidity is the fact I don’t need them doing the work because I always pay to have a professional arborist do the work long before they ever show up. Last time, it cost them over $5,000.00 in repairs.

Bruno I have suffered similarly.

Our local council, while upgrading the water mains and roads offered a deal that could not be refused on installing extra water feeds/meters for future duplex/quadraplex dwellings on a lot/house I own. The backhoe broke up my concrete driveway. The independant contractor paid for the driveway repair.

But what a PITA

I would not have been able to contain myself. I probably would have got an assault charge. It amazes me that when someone scratches your car how the try to fix the issue by wipeing the car with there sleeve or a random rag or something.

I came to get the licence number of their van just in case the names I had been given were false. These two guys had got their heads together, and I heard just before they saw me: "did you see him shaking" fortunately for the one speaking I saw he had a serious expression on his face. If he had been smirking or laughing I could have physically lost it then.
