Challenge to fabricators and vendors

I want to issue a challenge to all the fabricators and vendors out there to come up with a true RAM AIR induction system for the 6.1 like that seen in the 1969-1970 OLDs 442.

There were two snorkels at the bottom of the bumper for the intake. Then two tubes coming up to the manifold.

All the LX cars - 300C, Magnum, and Charger have perfect holes next to the fog lamps - although they are different shapes. These would be absolutely perfect to fit a custom snorkel and then the appropriate tubing and filters.

I think this would be really neat and OEM looking!

What does everyone think?

I know the Volant has a lower extension for 1 side to draw air in, although it's not really ram air it's sorta in the vicinity. Just fyi.

I have the volant. The tube that goes down there is puny. I think I'm going to go for a GSM or Hennessey unit soon.

Scott, two would be cool (maybe the engineers and gearheads can explain if / how two are better than one and if it is even possible on our cars) and hopefully the vendors will hear your request. You might want to consider the GSM or Hennessey units as SHADE mentioned, while you wait because it has taken a year to have these units available to us.

I have the Hennessey CAI. It is a true CAI system. It draws the outside air through the driver side lower intake vent. The air is directed to the K&N Filter that sits behind the front bumper fascia. The air is then passed through the intake pipe and then into the Intake Manifold.

What effect does installing the GSM or Hennessey CAI have on the front, driver-side brake? Supposedly you have to remove the duct for either of these systems to be effective.

Most cars today do not allow for any type of air to channel to the front brakes. It was nice Chrysler added the lower inlet channels, for the larger Brembo's on the SRT's. With the OEM intake, on the SRT's there is a slight opening in the driver side front brake inlet channel. This is to direct some of the air flow towards the OEM filter box. I will sacrifice a little heated brakes for more air flow into the filter for the CAI. So yes, I took all of the air flow from the driver lower vent and directed all that air, to the CAI filter. I have never had a problem with any brakes on any car, truck I have had and I live in Texas. None of my vehichles ever had air channels for the front brakes.

My first thought is addressed to Freebird.

What does the front of the car look like if you remove the drivers side air channel black box? You have custom intake covers, but if you did not have these covers, would you see the orange or blue cone filter down there behind the bumper? If so I think it would look funny.

Another thing to point out is that there are valves that can be added upstream of the intake before the manifold to prevent water from entering the engine. I would hope that a properly designed system may include these valves so we wouldn't be so concerned going through a puddle.

Last, the CAI intakes from both Hennessey and GSM are hard for non-technically inclined folks like myself to service. According to Hennessey, each year the filter should be serviced - either replaced or cleaned. With the cone down there, you have to remove the inner fender liner or bumper. This is something that I cannot do at home.

So at present, I would be more inclined to go with the Mopar CAI which sits up high and does not generate a RAM AIR effect. Personally I'd much rather go with a custom fabricated system with neat OEM looking inlets, two tubes running up to the intake with appropriate valves to stop water intake, and large filters that I could service.

If that system were available

Scott, you can always drive to GSM and have them do it for you (I too am not technically inclined) as the GSM Ram Air is the same as Hennesseys. I think GSM finally knows now to remove the plastic piece that directs the air to the brakes and not to the CAI as a few of us on the forum had to find out the hard way .

Of course first you do need to ask yourself why you are doing the mod in the first place. The way I see it, there is a risk and a hassle with certain mods, but the payoff in performance is worth it to me, but wil it be the same with you? Good luck with your decision.
