fuel additives

Do any of these fuel additives really work such as Octane boosters?? Is so, which ones.
I heard that they can do harm.

What do you guys think?

I asked that same question to my trusted source...owner and racer Mike at AZ Power and Sound.

Here was his repy: the ONLY "real" octane booster is called "Torco". there are a few shops in town that have it, but you would have to call Torco to see which ones... the company we bought it from went out of business. You can add one can to a tank of 91 and generally get 95-96 octane out of it! Otherwise grab 100 octane at the pump, there are a few around town.

you guys think getting 97 octane at the pump plus adding octane booster be to much??

Here is my .02

Everything that I have researched shows that our cars are calibrated for 91 octain. So using anything more simply does not do you any good. However, if you have certain mods, i.e. in my case nitrous, you want the extra ocane to prevent pinging or knock (pre ignition). I still pump 91 premium octain with use of 100 HP shot of juice. But once I go to the track and start doing some tests, I'll need more octain so I can bump up the shot of nitrous and lower when it comes on.

octane myths

sorry, there is no more power in high octane fuel unless the engine can recognize it and bump the timing.

All octane is is the level of resistance to ignition. Thus high octane fuel is harder to burn than low octane.

No power advantage in a properly tuned and operating engine. Most modern engines actually will lose a few ponies when running lower octane than spec.

Your best bet is a "top tier" fuel from a TT certified company. I buy 93 only because thats what is available here in top tier certified fuel stations.

but the timing on all modern cars is computer-controlled. a GM engineer told me years ago that the Northstar detected the octane level and set the timing appropriately. do our HEMIs not do the same??

Yes, within predefined limits. In the case of the SRT-8 the limits are between 91 and 93 RM/2. Fuel outside that range will adversely affect performance.

I understand it used to be the computer would advance tell it talked to ya then adjust accordingly.......My Porsche is like that kinda .....just disregard this statement i need another beer
